Interesting. I notice that Parodius Da has a stage based on the Buddhist hell, which of course is also the setting of Genpei Toumaden.

The boss is princess Kaguya from the japanese folktale Taketori Monogatari. Another widespread folklore is, that the moon is inhabited by a rabbit.
Since the level is located on the moon, it makes perfect sense to combine them.
