Hi guys / Question about Shmupmame

Sup, I'm new to the forums but I've been into shmups for a few months now since I played R-Type III, more recently I've gone on to a couple bullet hells which I've really enjoyed and now I'm really wanting to sink my teeth into more.
Anyway, I got a question about Shmupmame since I couldn't find anything useful with the search :s
Games load fine but won't respond to my keyboard or PS3 controller using MotionJoy, are there any other programs (that are preferably free) that might solve the problem? (I have a 360 controller too if there's something for that)
Just how the hell do I change the control settings anyway? Please, help this desperate scrub :'(

360 controllers should work right out of the box with MAME on Windows no problem. I use my HRAP-EX with it and it works just fine. For some non games (non MAME) you might use to install xbcd, which are special 3rd party drivers that allow you to change mappings of things. For example, the stick on a HRAP (and I suspect most other sticks) registers as a POV-hat. Most games do not look for POV-hats, so you can use xbcd to make Windows think the POV-hat is a pad instead.

Pressing the Tab button will open the menu to change controls and various other options. Chances are it has detected your controller, just make sure you plug it in before actually starting MAME - MAME does not like it when you plug in a controller mid-game.
