Recommended Anime/Manga?

Finished 2001 Nights. One of the most joyous sci-fi comic book experiences ever, up there with some of my favourite 2000AD Alan Moore shorts, and Bradbury literature. What a pleasure. Did this guy do any more sci-fi in the short story vein, cos this was inspired.

Yep it definitely looks like it has a Tharg's Future Shocks feel to it. I have to read it soon .

I've decided to read Battle Angel Alita. Always meant to get through the whole thing after grabbing the first two GN's back in the day, and I love Kishiro's atmospheric art style. He's a good argument as to why all the colour and character has drained from modern Manga.

There's tons of unique stuff in modern manga, both story and art-wise. Sadly most of it is available only through scanlations and the commercially released titles in the West are generally shonen garbage or moe, but there's a wealth of great "modern" manga if you know where to search.

Wow, epilogue arc was amazing. Kept me guessing till the very end. I even felt bad for Minmay.

Can anyone help me with Gunnm?

Don't worry, various Wiki's have helped me make sense of it. The 'Carol' story is Sweet Night, a one-shot that takes place 5 yrs before the start of the original Gunnm, which is probably why they included it before the first chapter, and probably why the translation is so dodgy (since I assume it's never been published overseas.)

The other thing was called 'Another Story' - a side story that I haven't read because I have no idea where it's meant to be in the timeline. I'm just going to read the original VIZ story because I assume there's no better net translation of the original Gunnm that corrects the names (Alita -> Gali etc).

I have watched all Macross - I like pretty much ALL of it except I think 'Macross II' - I even proper liked Macross 7.

The original SDF is brilliant no doubt, if you liked it's feel you should check out Orguss if you get the chance, IMO it has that same 'magic'.

DYRL is sublime from start to finish. I love how Frontier's films were done in a similar way.

Gargantia doesn't really have it that badly, it hadthe ubiqitous 'beach/bathhouse episode' but I think it was done in a kindof fresh way.
Valvrave does I suppose and also I mean just wtf was going on at the end of the last episode? o_O I presume you saw it?

I have just finished Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz, well pretty much overall I just did not like it, and Endless Waltz is nowhere near the quality of CCA or 0083 in my eyes. Gundam Wing continued to be every bit as crap as I thought it was going to be when I started out. There was a small jump to being 'ok' for like 5 episodes from about episode 30 on, but then it just went right back to pure sh1t. All the political soliloquy's which UTTERLY made no sense, so much side swapping motive changing going on that by half way through, I really didn't give a sh1t about ANY of the characters too.

Top that off with the fact I hated all the mecha except some of the grunts (Leos etc.), and well yeah - DID NOT LIKE!

it is incredibly and constantly in bad taste :p, the last scene of that episode (where Sleepy has a 'date' with the reporter) is a pretty good example of this.

Makes me wonder why the Studio Nue staff went with the blues ending theme as it's quite a stark 180 degrees from the stellar OP indeed. There's always room for a proper Mospeada sequel. The actual old-school Mospeada jets (the blue, red and green colored variants) that transform as a triple changer from the likes of Gakken were legendary for their time (even had retractable spring loaded landing gear and opening canopy). Apparently, the original designer of the Mospeada Legioss jet fighter + booster unit was none other than Shinji Aramaki.

Mospeada/GoBots Factoid time: The Monogram produced GoBots 1/48th scale model kit of Leader-1 sold at retail in the USA was based off of the red colored Legioss jet model kit sold in Japan indeed.

I recall seeing some cool Mospeada model kits sold locally at some stores back in the mid-1980s (as they were unsold NOS direct from Japan after Mospeada had ended it's run on the airwaves and the Japanese wherehouses were eager to get rid of their excess Mospeada related merchandise -- model kits, toys, etc). They sure do fetch a pretty penny these days, especially if in MIB condition nowadays.

Of all three of the Robotech shows, Mospeada is the only one I prefer in original Japanese (makes me a heathen, I know).

How the heck can I get to see Orguss? There was gonna be a licensed release, but it never took off AFAIK...

So, in recent news:

--Watched Shoin no Ou. I had heard that this was basically Hikaru no Go but for Shogi. Well, that's part-true... it's about Shogi, kinda-sorta. But whereas HikaGo was a genuinely good story, Shion is a mess that can't decide what tone its going for and feels like its made by committee. That said, it becomes decent by the halfway point, but it never becomes good.

--Now I'm trying to watch Gatchaman again. the first time I was watching it thru the DVDs and, this being when I was an internet neophyte, I never found/purchased the later DVD volumes. Speaking of which, Sentai Filmworks might re-release it this year. Definitely gonna have to grab it. (Now if only someone would license Chojin Sentai Jetman...)

Yeah Im' gonig to try to fully watch it soon, I'm on episode 5 I think, there are a LOT of episodes, it really is SO different to the BOTP which we saw on Irish children's TV :p.

I think it possiby will be re-released as I just saw a trailer this morning for a live action (!) Gatchaman film...

Saw Do You Remember Love? today. Aside from the mind-blowing animation(my god, that first concert with the silhouettes), it was a little underwhelming in terms of plot. The series told the story far, far better.

That said, one thing the movie did better was Minmei. She was a likable character for once.

yeah I really did enjoy DYRL as an 'audio visual feast' but I do still prefer the original TV series, also I didn't like the redesigned pilot uniforms.

Then again I suppose you're supposed to think of DYRL as a film being shown in the Macross universe years afterward.

Yeah I usually kinda feel that way too, but I'm at episode 22 of Mazinger Z now and I'm actually enjoying it more and more every episode at this stage.

It was weird watching DYRL after watching the TV show. So much crap they cut off in the film. I only watch the film as I watched Akira and Birth/Planet Busters, turn off your mind and only care for audio/visuals.
