xbox euro/jap in US ?

Post by -S.L- »

hello

i have two xbox 360, one jap and one euro.

I was wondering which one could work on US sockets (110 volts) without damaging my console ?

Of course the plug is different so i'll need an adapter for that.

Can I actually plug my EURO (220 volts) with a plug adaptor directly without any problems ? ( just like I do with my laptop when i go abroad)

Thanx for your advice !

There are many different revisions of 360, which all have slightly different power requirements. If the PSU has the correct power output (check the labels on the PSU and the console), then you can use a Japanese PSU in the USA without a converter.
Other possibilities: You can use a European PSU with a Japanese 360 in Europe. You can't use a Japanese PSU (=100V input) in Europe (230V) without a stepdown converter. You can't use a European PSU in the USA without a power converter.

You have to be careful here. If you are currently using the PSU that came with the "Japanese" one without a step-down converter then you actually have an "Asian" model. Japanese 360s ship with a 110-127V PSU while Asian 360s ship with a 220-240V PSU. The PSUs are not multi-voltage. Pre-Slim there are 203/175/150W PSUs (older PSUs work with newer non-Slim models but not the other way around); the Xbox 360 S uses a 135W PSU with a totally different DC connector.
  • Do you have a "Japanese" or "Asian" Xbox 360?
  • What is the wattage on your PSUs?

I've used my 4gb slim jap for months and months in the US with no problems. Really though, you should check what your PSU says.

Thank you so much for your explainations, though im really bad with those voltage thing, I prefer that you have a close look at it and confirm what's possible or whats not :D

Ok so this is the power adapter of my EURO xbox 360

and this is the one from my JAP xbox 360

BOTH XBOX are SLIM models.

Looking forward for your expert point of view.

Worst case scenario i would buy a voltage converter just like I bought for my xbox jap and my new net city cabinet (also jap)

Cheers

Based on those pictures you should be able to use your Japanese PSU (100-127V~3.7A,47-63Hz 135W) in the US to power either your Japanese Xbox 360 S or your PAL Xbox 360 S.

You can use your Japanese Xbox 360 S where you are right now with the Euro PSU (200-240V, 47-63Hz 135W).

Now video-wise the Japanese Xbox 360 S is fine with US equipment. I'm not so sure about the PAL Xbox 360 S - that might be an analog (composite, S-video, component) vs. digital (HDMI) output issue.

Apparently you can force a PAL Xbox 360 into 60Hz mode (PAL60):

though it seems that the setting may only be accessible while the console is connected via composite video.
After you force the console into 60Hz at least HDMI and VGA video should work on most US equipment.

You need more than just an adapter plug. You need a step-down converter.

I would recommend that you buy a third party North American power supply from amazon (I don't think that you can order an official power supply through Microsoft's support if you don't live in North America). It will work with your JP 360 as is without any converters. I've used one of those for my JP 360 here in Canada for over a year and it worked like a charm until the power supply broke and I ordered an official one through Microsoft's support :P Having that said, I always use step-down converters for all of my other Japanese consoles.

I don't have any experiences with running a EU 360 in North America but my EU Wii runs perfectly on my HD TV here in Canada using only a travel adapter for the electrical outlet.

Hi -S.L-,
I live in the USA, and used a Japan region Xbox 360 here many, many times WITH the Japan power cord/AC adapter that was included with it. I always plugged that into a power strip (surge protector) to be safe.. then into the wall. You can get one of those power strips in the USA when you get there for less than $10 at almost any department store. It will work without one, but for under $10, you will have peace of mind while your xbox is plugged in. Never had a single problem doing it like this.

Depending on which unit you have, you can use multiple PSUs. Older Xboxes require one of the older power supplies, because they output more power (and the older units require more power), but newer Xboxes can use them too. The newer PSU I have for my 2009 US unit is still pretty big, though.
