Best competitive 2-player mame/arcade games.
Something where you both (players) are sweating while giving your absolute best.
No matter if shooting, sports, or something completely different: just that it doesn't have much randomness and you play against another player.

Thanks

Windjammers, Magical Drop III, Super Puzzle Fighter are my standby three. Bust-a-Move too and Dr Mario but they'are a bit aged. TGM versus mode if you're both pretty good :P Oh and Track'n'Field and Hyper Sports. Tron-like games are also very good, but Tron itself is pretty aged compared to the modern PC versions.

Competitive puzzle/arcade games are great, yeah. So a couple of others are Puchi Carat (Taito puzzle game - think Bust a Move meets Breakout), Money puzzle Idol Exchanger (like Magical Drop with math!), and of course Twinkle Star Sprites. Trap15 and some other dude I don't care about were talking about the Puzzle de Pon games on IRC, so that would probably fit the bill too.

#1 Harvest Moon type games on the DS/PSP. I hear Rune Factory has dungeons which I'd probably prefer, but I still wouldn't mind trying out one of the more classic titles.
Well, there`s Shepherd`s Crossing 1-2 and Innocent Life, but Rune Factory 3 is honestly much better than either.
I'm a little late with my reply but THX for the recommendations.

I think I'll start with NNN then Bladestorm if I can pick up a cheap copy. As for the other genre I'l stick to Rune Factory, since I'm probably wasting my time and money with the others.

Triggerheart Exelica vs Trouble Witches Neo: which should I get? Just got some extra Xbox live points, wondering which would be more enjoyable/worth it. The grapple mechanic seems cool in Exelica so I'm leaning towards it, but if someone suggests Neo is way better for some reason I'm interested in it too.

Or if there's a non-shmup game you could recommend that'd be cool too, would preferably like something on the more 'casual-friendly' side for local co-op play like Castle Crashers/BattleBlock Theatre to play with the husband who's less of a gamer. I've not really looked much so I don't know what else is out there that'd be equally enjoyable.

Anyone tried Retro/Grade? Rhythm-based "anti-shmup" - on sale on steam. Seems to either be good stuff or eternal backlog material.

More in the line of survival/horror, but RE2 and Parasite Eve are both great. Also Megaman Legends 1&2.

Kinda obvious, but try out the demos. I knew immediately that ThE wasn't my thing and that TWN was right up my alley.

It's kind of obvious, but not really a third person shooter, but Silent Bomber is okay. I recall hating the everloving hell out of the characters and storyline though, and not all the missions were really hot (especially a few near the end). Still, when it's good, it's pretty good!

I adore the fuck out of Silent Bomber. The characters are terrible, but it is such an enjoyable game.

Gotcha. Probably will try out Parasite Eve first. I am looking for really shooty stuff though.

Still desperately looking for a decent game for 2vs2, but it seems to be almost non-existent outside of strategy games and a few fighting games (or FPS but they need not apply). Grr.

What's a good, not terribly difficult, medium length RPG for PS1? I know everyone says FFVII, and I never did play it back when it was new, but I've read recent re-reviews and many say it doesn't hold up today, it's broken, bad localization, etc....

Rhapsody is probably the shortest and easiest.

There's also a port of Chrono Trigger on PS1.

Check out Brave Fencer Musashi or Threads of Fate if you want the most charming games Square ever produced. CIT mentioned Rhapsody, which is a great game but a very niche one. If you won't play FFVII because of a poor localization (I don't think I've ever heard that before), then Rhapsody is probably pushing it.

Its not that I wouldn't play it, just been hearing lately that it doesn't hold up.

The RPG's I've enjoyed in the modern era are the Fallout 3 / New Vegas, and the Mass Effect Series... not RPG's in the strictest sense, I thought I'd dabble in older menu-driven RPG's / JRPG's to see if I like them, there's so many for the PS1/PS2 era that it's like trying to figure out what your first shmup should be... so many choices.

FFVII doesn't hold up because it never did because it's an overhyped emotional teen-angst game everybody played before they knew what a decent story and a decent game were.

I played the entirety of FFVII like 7 or 8 times back in the day :3

I really need to give it a try again to see if it holds up for me.

FF7's a very good JRPG that receives backlash criticism due to its enormous popularity. It wouldn't be a bad choice for your first stab at the genre, though if you go back to the 16-bit era, you might also try Chrono Trigger or Phantasy Star: The End of the Millennium. Chrono Trigger has a PS1 port, like CIT said, but its loading times are heinous.

I went to play FF7 about a year ago and... gah.
t really bugs me: it's ugly even for a 1997 PS1 game, the story is pretty poor, the translation is... actually it's delightfully bad at times [except when it hurts you, do not attack when the tail is up like the fucking game says], etc. There are much better games to waste your time on.

I personally enjoyed the hell out of Tales of Destiny on the PS1, but it's slightly non-traditional [random battles are 2D real-time affairs], and the last few dungeons are annoying as shit. IIRC, there is also one part that outright requires an FAQ too, thanks to poor translation [if you are looking for an FF7 era RPG with decent translation... good luck].
Also, it looks like a super-SNES game, even running at SNES resolution.

Not too long, not exactly hard. It's likable enough.

Lunar Silver Star Story ticks all boxes.
do not attack when the tail is up

Lunar's great! My only hesitation in recommending it's that the difficulty curve's steeper than the other games I mentioned, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

What's cool about the 360 port of Trouble Witches Neo is that it sports some extra gaming content that the Taito Type X arcade version of TW doesn't have (at least the Type X version supports 4:3 arcade monitors as it should be). How cool is that?

Another cool PSX title that sports a 3rd-person viewpoint is none other than Trap Gunner. It got a proper USA release as well.

How about any 3D Japanese real-time third person dungeon crawlers (think like Baroque, .Hack, or Demon's Souls -- not Diablo or Baldur's Gate)? I know that's a specific one, but I really love these. Any console is fine. Bonus points if it includes a huge tower. Extra if it's bloody.

In addition, console roguelikes in general? The only ones I've really liked so far are Baroque and Shiren the Wanderer (DS), but there's got to be more. The more complex, the better. I would prefer if it's item-based and resetting your level and losing items is a must. I don't like the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games or Izuna at all.

If you haven't played Final Fantasy VII, you owe it to yourself. I reckon most folks who say it doesn't hold up are focused a lot on the graphics. The CGs aren't as good as the realtime 3D in modern games and the field graphics are awfully blocky. But the game has tremendous expansiveness for a JRPG. I don't think the story is all that great but the industrial/tech setting is pretty amazing. However, it's not exactly medium length at around 50 hours. There's nothing broken about it compared to other Final Fantasy games, and the localization—while leaving quite a bit to be desired—is still better than most RPG localizations of its day.

I'd definitely second Lunar Silver Star Story Complete followed by Eternal Blue Complete. The magical atmosphere of these games are amazing. The first will take 30-40 hours and the second slightly longer. The games are fairly easy (I lost to only one boss apiece) as long as you fight every enemy in every new dungeon. If you don't like the first few hours, don't bother continuing; it'll be clear very quickly if you'll love them or hate them.

Suikoden is also a solid and medium difficulty RPG at around 20 hours. The second if usually held in higher repute (not by me) but it's over double the length.
