RQ: Pulstar second button

What exactly does B do in this game? I know that you can press A+B to detonate your option barrier thing, but other than that, the instruction card and How To Play loop are remarkably unclear.

B locks your bits (the little pods on top and under your ship) into place. They can be either aiming freely according to your movement, or be locked into pointing at one direction.
