Diehard Gamefan's Alex Lucard is an asshat

Post by Stormwatch »

I was reading Gamefan's review of Sturmwind, when I noticed an itty bitty mistake: the writer mentioned Gunlord as a shooter. I went to the comments section and pointed that it was actually a platformer. Rather than own up to his mistake, the idiot tried to cover it up: he edited the review, and called me illiterate.

For a moment I thought: maybe I really misread it? Google Cache says otherwise.

So, again I went to the comments section and called him on his bullshit. Which he deleted, and seems to have blocked me.

Well, too bad he can't delete the cache. But just in case, I took some screenshots of that. And for kicks, one of his own website, with a copy of that review with the same mistake.

What next? I emailed Gamefan's parent company, Inside Pulse, and warned about the asshat's behavior. I hope I've caused him some trouble. :P

What's so wrong with calling Gunlord or Contra a shooter?

It's a Platshooter, you noooooooobs :O

Really though, he should have just modified his review to say platformer with shooting elements ..

Such is the way of HARDCORE game review.

I'm more interested in whether Sturmwind is any good. What's the verdict, people?

That's not relevant, the point is: insulting readers is not a very professional behavior.

I don't approve of that, for sure, but such is the way of Online.

And here you are hoping that he'll get fired, rather than learning the way of Online Retribution.

Not fired, a little dressing down would do.

While I would never call GunLord a shooter, there's actually nothing historically wrong with calling it one. US magazines back in the 90s occasionally used "shooter" to describe shooting-heavy action games such as Contra and Metal Slug (not unlike how the Japanese liberally use "STG"). Was there any consistency to it? As with the ambiguous "platformer" label that I mentioned recently, no. I don't recall any source ever labeling Mega Man as a "shooter."

I would personally just classify all horizontal non-auto-scrolling games as sidescrollers.

I'm not sure if you realize but "duh" is often used to express condescension. That's why the writer repeated it in his reply. I would try to avoid that type of language unless you're looking to provoke someone. Although I've been guilty myself in the past, it does nobody good to have petty squabbles in an already small community.

To me you are the asshat making a big deal of something so trivial and absurd.

No need for each party to get so worked up. It's not like they said "Eat shit and die" to each other at some point.

I have to respectfully decline your proposition of coprophagia and early cessation of life functions. I could tell you why, but I promised to stop referring to copulation in a manner that is detrimental to other fellow humans.

It's not the same Gamefan, it's a new site that revived the name with Dave Halverson's blessing.

By the way, from what I read here, some of the old Gamefan people hate Halverson's guts. It seems he scammed investors, stole payroll money, and stiffed printers to the point that no one would accept to produce the magazine anymore. Terry Wolfinger calls him "a slimeball in every facet of life".

Personally, I'd call Gunlord an action-platformer (I.e., lots of action but with expansive exploration) with run 'n gun elements (Contra). The truth is, Gunlord (likewise with Turrican) is difficult to label properly without writing an essay on it, heh. Still, that's no excuse for his douchebaggery.

Alex Lucard? I know someone locally who had his name legally changed to that, so he could literally be Alucard.
