Recommended Anime/Manga?
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Just watched the first two episodes of Shingeki no Kyojin, and so far it seems to be a great adaptation. It slightly tones the most gruesome bits down, but other than that the director hasn't taken any dumb liberties with it yet. As I thought, the experience is vastly improved with decent artwork. Even though I know some folks here have a strong distaste for 3D (which here is used for the more dynamic shots), if you want quality new anime this seems to be a good pick.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki is beautiful, recommended (don't even think about reading the wiki, it has a super spoiler).
Can't wait to watch Aoi Miyazaki's next film.

What should I watch next: Dagger of Kamui or Bubblegum Crisis?
Either one is going to be great, I know.

Yeah, both are awesome. BBC is probably more essential; the epitome of the 80s OVA. I'd say go there, but you can't go wrong with either.

Well, it has cowboys, ninja, Mark Twain, and pirate gold, among other things, so I think it would be one hell of a time.Edmond Dantes wrote: *has never seen Dagger of Kamui, sadly*
I did bow to peer pressure and watch half of Bubblegum Crisis last night. I won't reiterate what you all surely know, other than that "this is the best thing I've ever seen ever omg, all these robots and glam rock, so good, etc etc etc."
Wasn't expecting such an upturn in quality from AD Police Files (which I thought were just... ok.).
Is the sequel, Bubblegum Crash, as good? I'd certainly hope so, since I'd hate to see the series leave me hanging (the way Dominion Tank Police did with its lousy final episode).

Both Bubblegum Crash and AD Police Files feel like they're on the same level to me. That is, "they're okay just by themselves, but suck if compared to Crisis."

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Bubblegum Crash is substantially lower in quality compared to BGC and didn't really resolve a great deal (anything at all really) in regards to the ongoing fight with Genom. Also Priss’s VA chose to not return for the new OVA which was a great shame. They even poke fun at her former seiyuu in the beginning of the first episode of Crash.
As Edmond summarized, decent by itself but quite poor in comparison. Actually everything made post Crisis set in the same universe is inferior in some way to the original masterpiece. Madox-01 I liked though as a fun little one shot OVA. Not brilliant by any means but entertaining at least, give that one a go.

Is Madox-01 the same universe? I love that little OVA, it's art is incredible, I never knew it was related to Crisis thoughDaneSaga wrote: Madox-01 I liked though as a fun little one shot OVA. Not brilliant by any means but entertaining at least, give that one a go.

Madox was the prototype for the armour suits worn by the AD Police if I'm not mistaken, so chronologically it takes place before anything else in said universe.Raytrace wrote: Is Madox-01 the same universe? I love that little OVA, it's art is incredible, I never knew it was related to Crisis though

brilliant - I love the shiny art on the mecha in both and I did think they felt sortof relatedDaneSaga wrote:Madox was the prototype for the armour suits worn by the AD Police if I'm not mistaken, so chronologically it takes place before anything else in said universe.Raytrace wrote: Is Madox-01 the same universe? Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Shingeki no Kyojin episode 3 alters the original story order a bit (following the actual chronological order instead) and covers the first part of the training arc. I guess they though that a small break after two episodes of giants eating people would be good. But I feel that just as the gore is lighter than in the original, the comic and "cute" parts in this segment of the story were given a bit more time than they should. They certainly feel way more out of place than in the original. Also, annoying J-pop near the end of the chapter.
Still a decent episode, but I hope these subtle changes don't get less subtle as time goes on.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Decided to watch Dennou Coil.
On episode 20, it's pretty enjoyable. The beginning parts make me think of a cyberpunk Ghibli production, and the look certainly helps. It gets pretty odd in the middle. Lots of things remind me of Digimon Tamers, except without the whole monster-training aspect, moreso about how it deals with AIs and a digital world intersecting the real one.
EDIT:
finished the series
Last couple episodes are really odd, loads of stuff is revealed, and it seems a little pulled out of left field. Still enjoyable. The last 2-3 episodes seems like they were engineered to try to make people cry...
all this neural transmission or whatever is messy, and the relationship between everyone is confusing as hell
also, the glasses seem like a really cool concept [this is why there are people excited about Google Glass at all], except Megamass does just what you'd expect a corporation to do, hide issues and accept 'reasonable' losses to save face instead of openly admitting major issues...

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I'm getting a hold of a few anime movies to watch when I have some free time. So far I got:
- Redline
- Ninja Scroll (watched this 10 years ago with english voices, will re-watch with original audio)
- Wings of Honneamise (as suggested early in this thread)
Is there anything else worth watching that I'm not aware of?

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Been watching Hikaru no Go lately and I'm kinda impressed. I went in expecting it to be a ripoff of Yu-Gi-Oh but with Go instead of card games, but... outside of the main character being possessed, its totally not like Yu-Gi-Oh or Beyblade or similar shows at all. There's no using games to save the world from evil or anything like that... its all about a personal journey.
What really impresses me is how the show is willing to give Hikaru a kick in the balls, and demonstrate just how hard becoming a professional Go player can be. He wants to be an Insei [look it up]? Fine... but in doing so he's giving up on his Go club at school, and many of his friends justifiably feel betrayed. He played a guy he thought was really strong... only to learn that the "strong guy" was a dropout from the Insei school who never made it past the bottom of the barrel. It's seeing Hikaru think everything is smooth sailing and then seeing him get kicked in the balls like this that make this show worth watching.
This is the kind of show America would never make.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I recall watching the original Japanese VHS release of "Dagger of Kamui" back in April of 1988. A fan translation accompanied it to get some storyline of it. The ending death scene of our main bad guy, that particular scene was a bit long (for the U.S. release, it was shortened a bit). Watching the Japanese movie trailer of DoK after viewing the movie was cool for it's time.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I watched it back when I was interested in Go. To be honest I didn't like it that much, mainly because it's a kid's show at heart. Lots of "let's settle this with a game of Go" to solve minor problems and the whole rivalry thing almost had homosexual connotations.Edmond Dantes wrote:Hikaru no Go
But the part where Hikaru joins the Insei school...yeah, that's the best part of the story. Shows how tough is the journey to become a professional player. For that part alone it was worth watching the show.
As for the recommendations...that's a lot of stuff I'm not familiar with. Will have to check them all out. Cheers.

What do you mean, "almost"?Ruldra wrote:and the whole rivalry thing almost had homosexual connotations.

Sadly, Hikaru no Go has actually convinced me to give up on Go... I'm trying to be good at every game I play and I don't have room for a game I'd have to dedicate my life to. Still fun to watch and to mess around with Many Faces on a 9x9 board though.

I'm not watching that untill there are at least some form of decent subs out
I think they're about 3 days away (I think people were already making them for ages based on the (dreadful) cam rip).

Just to let ya'll know, I got my pre-ordered, first half of Righstuf's Rose of Versailles in the mail today. Looks bootiful. Currently on sale on their site for 30 bucks, which is about 15 less than Amazon, and worth every penny. Hopefully they keep with this and continue releasing more 70s goodies!

How does the DVDs compare to Live-evil's encode of RoV? (which I understand was taken from several different sources).
Brilliant show and I wouldn't hesitate for a second in purchasing the discs if they've been remastered or are at least of higher visual/ audio quality.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I actually hesitated to watch Live-Evil's sub due to RightStuf's release, so I sadly can't really compare. Judging from the file sizes and ratios of the current subs, I can only imagine this is a huge improvement. Upscaled through BluRay it looks amazing, especially for a late 70s series. Very clean and crisp.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I emm well fuck it I'll be honest - I liked it quite a bit, I thought I was going to hate it, but I really didn't. People complaining the usual stuff like 'it's messy/all over the place' etc. and 'it doesn't explain anything' obviously weren't watching the same End Of Evangelion I was watching (or for that matter the last quarter of the TV series). I thought it actually did explain a fair bit of itself. It also seemed to bring back that kindof hollow melancholy (well ok depressing) feel of the original TV series, which I thought was lacking TOO much in the first 2 Rebuilds.KAI wrote:Finished 3.33. I enjoyed Anno's pretty blatant Yamato fanboying in the first third, it was almost like he said to himself ' OK I want to have those classic Yamato launch type bits with all the crew shouting orders at each other' and he just plonked it in, it even had lots of sea ships floating in the air around it.
