Let's talk about why this game rules so hard.
Your favorite installment?
Mine is DistorteD, just for this.

Re: beatmania IIDX thread
Foolishly I sold both my controllers a few months ago for £60. Both were boxed JKoCs.
I can only play up to about 10* songs.
This is probably the hardest song I've cleared.

Still got both my MMS figures and my konamistyle statues though.

I love RED's interface, but 5th Style is really the only one with music I still enjoy - but it was my first, so I'm totally biased.
I've long since sold my stuff, but back in the day I AAA'd One More Lovely Another. I've still got a few videos on my youtube page.

I'd probably say DJ Troopers is my most played.
I've only played since 08 though so I've got no real experience with anything pre 9th style.

Re: beatmania IIDX thread
LOL I used to play the shit out of the first 3 bemani games with my Namco stick.
Worked pretty well because the buttons are stagged almost like a piano keyboard, and I'd scratch with the joystick.
I might have to play it again now ...

I quit IIDX after Troopers, but still play a credit every now and then when I'm in Japan. What number are they up to now, 20?
RED through DistorteD were my most played, but I really like Something Wonderful from 6th style, and a bunch from 7th style, which was my first.

Re: beatmania IIDX thread
Yep 20, Tricoro is the latest installment.
I still don't understand why KONAMI stopped making ports of IIDX, or why they hired Redalice, Masayoshi Minoshima and all those musicians who became famous thanks to Touhou, and never worked with sampling masters MEGA and AYA again.

I've got 9-16 for PS2. A local owner has a 18 cabinet that I get to play every once in a while, however the plasma screen timing is drastically different from the crt I use at home so my scoring there is lulzy.
Some songs are great to sing along to the engrish.
"One more time for the scrambled eggs!"
"Somebody's cream!"
And just navigating the song select screen in Red.

Re: beatmania IIDX thread
Saw a Korean copy of Empress on eBay the other day relatively cheap (£35). This thread is making me want to get a KoC again..
Wonder if I'll even be able to play it properly on a 9" CRT, was hard enough on my 13" CRT.

Re: beatmania IIDX thread
Probably 10th Style or Empress. Empress is really great, DistorteD has a great OST too.
And boy am I ticked about no more CS IIDX.
TRICORO HAS HIDEKI NAGANUMA!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJADYru1K0Y
Also, Sampling Masters MEGA is the guy who went on to do the music for 999 and Virtue's Last Reward, Shinji Hosoe. You can tell.
I have 9, 10, 13, and 16. (and 'US')

8th Style still has my favorite songs.
LunaticRave2 is a pretty good substitute for no more CS releases, at least.

IIDX 10 fo life.
Re: beatmania IIDX thread
That tricoro poster hurts my brain like some anaglyph movie.
I used to be into IIDX, I think I had 4th, and 7th through 13th. Like most everything I do in my life, I wasn't particularly good at it and sold pretty much all my collection except for my BMUS set and Happy Sky, which is my favourite mix following 9th and 7th.
A few months ago there was a local craigslisting with tons of IIDX stuff including a DJDao controller, I was really tempted to jump on it but realistically I don't spend enough time playing and will never be good at it...

Re: beatmania IIDX thread
TRICORO dumped fuck yeah 32gb
Re: beatmania IIDX thread
Thanks for the heads-up, KAI.
I've been out of this for a long time. Last time I played was when Empress was dumped. Do those dumps still need to run on XP? I did actually set up an XP installation on a spare SSD a week or two ago, mainly for old Blizzard games.

Re: beatmania IIDX thread
I started at 7th and ended at GOLD. Really loved this series since it had a tough difficulty curve plus the music selection just kicked ass. I felt after GOLD the series started to become stale and to turn me off due to the increasing difficulty. Kind of ironic since I found having the most fun when playing it.
I consider 7th, 10th, RED, Happy Sky, DisorteD, and GOLD as the cream of the crops in the series. Nekomata master and Sota Fujimori are freaking geniuses making music.

Re: beatmania IIDX thread
I don't like Tricoro but we have it anyway + on PW.
Probably the least fun I've had playing 12's so far? Most of the songs are pretty shit anyway and the songs I like usually get removed, although of the songs I do like, I do like them quite a lot.
I'm GOKKUN on PW.

Re: beatmania IIDX thread
Hope you have an import-ready PS2. If you do, I suggest getting a US controller(cheapest method), and import something like 10th Style or Empress Best.CoolgyFurlough wrote:I want to get into beatmania, but don't have any access to the cab, where should I start?

Empress nowadays is retardedly expensive from what I can see on YAJ and eBay. I'd personally recommend 10th or DistorteD.cj iwakura wrote:Hope you have an import-ready PS2. Re: beatmania IIDX thread
It was always pretty expensive, I eventually bit the bullet and paid the $80 going rate. It is a two disc game, and has a LOT of songs, new and old.Jeneki wrote:Huh? Re: beatmania IIDX thread
LOL, I'm going to assume those are just hopelessly optimistic opportunists and not the going rate that people are actually paying for it.
Any of the styles are good (though going with 10th or later will get you some nice quality-of-life improvements), they all have pretty solid songlists that are good in their own ways. My personal favorites are probably DistorteD, 10th, and 6th, though.
I haven't played Bemani in a few years now, but for most of the 2000s it was a huge part of my life. Been listening to all of the soundtracks on shuffle lately, too. Oh, nostalgia.

Re: beatmania IIDX thread
I bought it from play-asia and it's sold out there apparently. I guess it being the last IIDX console game, uh, ever, is making it seem like a hot commodity.
I doubt it's really that rare.
