GBA homebrew

Post by Obiwanshinobi »

After a day's worth of exploring GBAdev library of freeware, I found:

a) many simply unfinished games (I'm not pointing finger as the devs don't owe me anything),

b) many respectably polished, yet diminutive games (SFCave, Street Racer),

c) surprisingly few games meeting my expectations. The question is why so few on such an established platform. I didn't expect average quality to be any higher. What I did expect was more spit polish and more finished products. I guess PC freeware has spoiled me.
Now's the time to ask the Community™ on here if they know of some bee's knees GBA homebrew I overlooked.
What caught my attention today:

THE GOOD

Super Star Soldier Advance - enough said.

SFCave - just an interactive demo that happens to be playable for score, but you know, in times of primordial LCD games, this would've been like the best thing ever. So good at what little it does... Most "immersive" 3D graphics on GBA hands down, easily on a par with the Stardust tunnel. Kalashnikov said that for a designer, the greatest challenge is to design something simple. Complexity by design is easy.

Anguna - in the vein of vintage Falcom games and Zelda, the game doesn't fuck about.

THE BAD

Uranus 1&2 - rarely do I use the word "euroshmup", but those are so "euro" I can't believe the designers were serious. 2 at least brought auto-fire to the table. On a handheld. In the year 2002. Production values - way above average.

THE WTF

The Fallen - everything about this one is sick. Neither like a "euroshmup", nor like any Japanese game I can think of. Spammable invulnerability reminds me of Air Wing Assault, oddly enough.

THE MEH

Another World - just like Goldrunner in that nothing seems to be wrong with the port, but the harsh truth of source material rears its ugly head.

Air Wing Assault - can't remember what I disliked about it, but for a shmup of such unique controls, it kept me busy rather briefly. Certainly daring.

Vulkanon-2.0 - neat bullet hell, but what reason do I have to dodge? Is getting hit detrimental to the score at all? Serious question.

Do you folks find GBA homebrew worth talking about just yet, or is it too unripe?

Bullet+GBA is decent bullet hell in the same vein as Vulkanon, but there are actually consequences for dying.

Super Wings is a pretty good monochrome Raiden-like.

There was also that game A Werewolf's Tale posted here awhile back by the dev. Quite promising; hope he's still working on it.

don't know much about GBA homebrew except that I made one back in the day. It's an overhead versus arena shooter but I never got around to the link code so you can only play against computer controlled enemies. http://www.hyakushiki.net/meiro.zip /plug

Meiro doesn't work with my flashcart (many of those homebrew ROMs are like that). Where can I download Super Wings from? One of shmups I tested yesterday felt sightly Toaplan-ish, but nothing to write home about and I can't even remember its name.

A Werewolf Tale and Holy Hell are exactly the sort of games I hoped to find. Had my share of issues with both, but their heart verily was in the right place.

Hoped to find "3D" shooters like Spectre and AMOK too, but all I see within the realm of Mode 7 are Doom/Wolf 3D clones and racers.

Tried fixing headers with gbata? It should work.

I'm just using the first party Super Card application that works for your average ROM. Have yet to try anything more customisable.

gbata is something you use to patch your room before you use whatever else program patches/transfers roms for you. Not in place of it.
