Re: Xbox 3 ("Durango")
This is going to make gaming meets/conventions really fucking inconvenient. Bring a console along but don't have an internet connection to access? Can't play a local game.
Some people are still on dialup or might want to use a console in an area with shitty/no internet. Apparently those people don't get to use an Xbox 3, ever. Jesus, is that the guy's actual twitter account? Does he think that's going to make for good PR?!

It shows they have no imagination and when feeble attempts to rehash the portable format of the late '80s fails, they assume they have to cede any gaming away from home.BareknuckleRoo wrote:This is going to make gaming meets/conventions really fucking inconvenient.

What's up next, an Xbox + Microsoft Phone bundle for hotspot everywhere for your console? That Twitter guy certainly seems to be living in the "everybody has a smartphone with unlimited data" world...

So... that was an indirect confirmation of the recent rumors, right? He is either really stupid (maybe he was drunk?) or this is some of those incredible intelligent marketing moves where they spread the worst things possible and then by release they show the console and have something like one-time activation for games and everybody is happy that it isn't as bad as they thought and (almost) nobody is complaining.
Usually I would say that a company can't be so ignorant to their customer base, but we are talking here about the company that forces the Windows 8 Metro GUI on Desktop users. I just wish that CAVE would choose the WII U as their next shooter heaven. I think it will be soon very very cheap and CAVE could actually use the controller to offer different modes like touch enabled gaming for some casual enjoyment in bed besides the arcade and HD modes.
Let's hope for the best next gen.

Again with the corporate white knighting. What's up with that?
As for the twitter comments by the Creative Director of Microsoft Studios: While the "Why on earth would I live there" comment may have been in jest, his defense of forced-online (along with his flawed logic) was no joke.

Maybe MS is in cahoots with some intelligence agency and they get sweet kickbacks for requiring customers to be connected at all times.

An always-on feature would definetely lower/erase my interest in the new Xbox.
What about people who don't have a hispeed-inet connection.
Or someone who just don't want to be online all the time. This decision if true isn't very smart. I like the 360. Good gaming device. But if this is going to be the route they're heading for with this i'll probably won't join the league of extraordinary gentlemen of Xbox720 owners.
By the way 'always on ...deal with it'. What a great comment and a nice way to tell people to shut the f*** up. Great guy.
This youtuber sums it up pretty good:

All of four people know this, though; Microsoft's PR people really ought to give him a talking-to, at least to cover their own interests. As far as *I'm* concerned, it's a great thing they're letting us see their real thoughts on this.hail good sir wrote:The twitter guy was just being silly.

My connection was down the whole night. If I had a Durango and wanted to play some game, I'd be shit out of luck. Up yours, M$!

He wasn't, though. Adam Orth appears to be a genuine asshole. From reddit:Ed Oscuro wrote:All of four people know this, thoughhail good sir wrote:The twitter guy was just being silly.

Microsoft tries damage control
he probably still makes a fuckton of money in spite of his brain damage or whatever causes him to be an idiot
cracked me up, yet it's also sad because it's so trueI'm only an idiot when I'm online and I'm always online

Well, I don't know that the 720 is going to encompass all of these things (although yeah, kinect looks like an obvious vector for hacker attacks), but that commentary neatly crystallizes everything going wrong with gaming at the moment.
It's funny, just the other day I managed to load up a (actually very popular) online game after days of spotty service, only to notice this message:
In the future, you're not supposed to be able to practice games as long as you want. Gaming will be like having a football thrown at your head. Somebody yells "THINK FAST" and by the time you're recovered from the ad blitz, your head is spinning, your wallet is empty, and they've taken the ball and run away.

Now, they just launched this particular version in January of last year. They're still accepting payment for premium items, and they haven't done anything to let people finish more of the game before they pull it. Well, I guess Adam Orth went to the Ken Kutaragi School of Public Relations. My reactions can pretty much be summed up by this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJhwyaAXy6A
If Microsoft doesn't change course on this, the XBOX 720 is doomed. Period.

Also, Microsot, just HAVE the XBOX 720 event already! Or at least set a date! I can understand that MS is upset about all the fake XBOX 720 websites out there, but they could dispel all the rumors on those sites by announcing the 720. GameSpot is saying May, IGN is saying later this month; Micrsoft needs to have this event sooner rather then later-especially in light of Orth's comments.

Agreed. It just goes to show how much social media have changed the marketing environment. Several years ago it took a pre-E3 conference featuring Sony strutting on stage at the height of their oblivious arrogance to damage the then-strong Playstation brand. Now we're seeing equally massive damage done to the Xbox brand image just by Microsoft not saying anything useful when the tide of chatter turns against them. The day of the meticulously planned press event as an effective tool is reaching its end, it appears.dave4shmups wrote:Also, Microsot, just HAVE the XBOX 720 event already! Or at least set a date! Words of wisdom from Digital Press:

I don't understand why everyone seems to feel this way. So he baited a few trolls and did some trolling of his own. Big deal.
Apparently employees aren't allowed to have opinions in today's world.
[...] Backwards compatibility doesn't mean crap to me. However, a slightly more interesting rumor about the PS4 is that your DLC from the PS3 will not be able to be transferred to the PS4.

You should probably link to your sources when quoting, that makes no sense out of context, what does he want transferred?Ed Oscuro wrote:Words of wisdom from Digital Press:I don't understand why everyone seems to feel this way. So he baited a few trolls and did some trolling of his own. Big deal.

PS3 DLC and PS3 downloadable games both require full backwards compatibility.
PS1/PS2 classics would work perfectly if there was full backwards compatibility.
He does not care about backward compatibility

Re: Xbox 3 ("Durango") - May require Online to Start/Play Ga
Yeah, that made no sense at all.
You disappoint me, Ed. How is that even remotely on the same level as having your right to privacy and ownership taken away?
This one said it pretty well.

Re: Xbox 3 ("Durango") - May require Online to Start/Play Ga
By the way, the direction Microsoft seems to be taking isn't surprising in the least if you paid a little attention in the past.
They always considered their Xbox to be a "trojan horse" to get into peoples' living-rooms, and they spared no expense to get it there. Leasing their Xbox products to you and turning them into surveillance/data mining devices is the next logical step.
The disconnect between what consumers want and what Microsoft offers has been growing in the past decade (Zune, Windows phones, Microsoft Surface, Windows 8 ). There's a reason why the adoption rate of Windows 8 is so slow (current market share: ~3%): People don't want the idiotic Metro interface on their dektop computers. If Micorsoft wouldn't force it on buyers of new PCs/notebooks, that number would be much lower.
Microsoft has always abused its OS- and Office monopoly (just look at the price of MS Office and how they keep changing around their propietary, closed document formats forcing customers to upgrade every few years), and they have a long-standing history of eroding consumer rights (selling you a "license" instead of the actual product, only allowing you to use it on a single computer you own, intrusive Windows/Office "activation" process that all but requires a urine sample).
I am very happy that Linux is slowly growing into a real alternative to the stranglehold of Windows (Ubuntu seems to be becoming "everybody's linux"). Valve released a Steam client for Linux two months ago, and downloads of Linux versions on Steam have already reached 16% (Apple: 5%). That's a huge deal.

You know Friendly, none of this is going to matter if it ends up with the shmups. We'll all buy it anyway. There might be another forum into the PS4 though.
