What's do you use to clean a CRT TV screen?...
I have 100% cotton rags, so that's no a problem, but I'm wondering what to use as far as liquids go. I've read that water is OK to use, but I'm skeptical. I don't think something like Windex would be OK, so I'm confused at this point.

I use microfiber cloths. They work quite well without any cleaner.

I used bottled water. Water from the tap is harder and tends to leave stripes.

I use a swiffer cloth to remove all the dust, and usually that's enough. Sometimes I'll wipe the screen with a little water + newspaper.

I've always used a little spray of windex with a cloth on mine
Is that harmful?

Re: What's do you use to clean a CRT TV screen?...
Depends on the presence of a coating. Windex is a super bad idea for an LCD, but on most glass and regular plastic surfaces it'll be fine. I wouldn't use Windex myself.
Probably products designed for lens cleaning will be fine too, although I laugh to think of somebody running a Lens Pen across a CRT.
For LCD screens Scott's "liquid gold Clean Screen" seems okay. A bit expensive though. Don't know how it would work on CRTs.

OK, I'll try that. I was skeptical about using just tap water.Fudoh wrote:I used bottled water. Water from the tap is harder and tends to leave stripes.

Damp microfibre cloth, or any standard window cleaner will be fine on CRTs, they don't have an outer coating. Don't use anything that will run off, so if using a cleaner just spray mist it.

A dry Swiffer or microfibre cloth I find works best to get dust off.
Microfibre cloths are great because you can use them dry and then wash them when they get dirty.

Except some CRTs do have a coating that can be ruined, as seen in the link I gave. Although it looks like Windex isn't universally bad for plastic screens...personally I wouldn't chance it, there's cheap ways to clean screens for the one time per decade I might consider it (I don't touch my screens so I don't have to clean them often).system11 wrote:Damp microfibre cloth, or any standard window cleaner will be fine on CRTs, they don't have an outer coating.

Oh yeah, totally forgot about the antiglare ones. Peels in strips when it starts to go.
Well if you're using it for arcade stuff, clean that coating off anyway

microfibre cloth, and the spray stuff for cleaning Glasses.

Cheap paper coffee filters work pretty well in the absence of microfiber cloth. No lint.
