Sealed Game Collecting? No thanks.

Post by Pyongyang »

I was bored tonight, finally a night with nothing zine-related to do. So I made this little video...

http://youtu.be/O1Tw3lPWTqQ

Moral of the story. PLAY THE DAMN GAME. :)

I'd collect sealed games if I had a time machine and could get them back when they were new-new.

Of course, I'd buy every game twice... once to collect, once to play.

Video games aren't paintings or sculptures; you can't appreciate the gameplay by staring at the box art, so keeping them sealed is essentially collecting them for their retail value alone, and not because you actually appreciate the games themselves.

But without opening it... how do you know it's new?

I'd expect there's a lot of collections out there with blank cd-r*'s and Super Mario Bro/Duck Hunt and ze like

* I'd at least include a profane .jpg on it if I were one of those guys

If they don't bring back Twinkies soon enough, people are going to start ripping open the sealed games in search of the hidden ones

Beautiful video, you're going to need to let me borrow that for the channel (back links to your own channel included of course. )

Good timing also. Casey120 sent me this topic for chuckles today.

The mind boggles that folk can be so desperate to acquire rare objects that they don't question why another person already has a zillion of them available for ready sale.

They deserve to be scammed tbh.

That would have totally made the video better. Pull open lid -> CDR with "Sucker" hand written on it.

I remember after I bought my copy of Radiant Silvergun the first I did was open it, throw away the packaging, and trash the spine card.

I think that goes to either a blood fetish or a death fetish.

Anyway, I think the only case where collecting a sealed game is okay is if its one of the older cartrage (sp?) type games, or perhaps a really old computer game. When it comes to them, you could just play them with an emulator, find them online, or whatever. However, if you're so interested in the box, don't fucking throw it away!

I started undressing myself around the 41 second mark, fantasizing that it was me unsealing the game.

What puzzles me most is that they seem to think the problem is just one seller and the fact that if a seal looks good it still automaticly means that it is original .

They should send one of these known reseals to VG grader just to test them for lulz and more panic

It's an old picture, I put the steps in the wrong order. That was a genuine sealed Taromaru that cost $750 in 2008, then it arrived and I opened it, and played it a few times. I'd probably play it more if I didn't need to move stepdowns around to achieve it.

Anybody still buying sealed old games off eBay and leaving them as-is should be very concerned. I open all my sealed games and since 2007, about a quarter of my "new" purchases have been fakes or reseals. Most of these sellers don't bother with duplicating the PS3 or 360 seal but other systems, especially handhelds, are easy prey. It's not easy to tell by seal anymore since there's a fair bit of discrepancy in seal type, especially on Nintendo platforms.

But when you look inside and see poor printing quality on the manual, fingerprints on the disc, scratches on the plastic, or missing leaflets of paper, then you know exactly what you bought. eBay is such a market for lemons nowadays yet still a vital source for games—and this problem isn't even just contained to eBay—that I'm not sure how sealed game collectors sleep at night.
