The Fog

Definitely not the same level of awesome as The Thing, but still a valiant effort by John Carpenter. I thought it would be much more gory than it was. Jamie Lee Curtis was not her sexy self either unfortunately, but it's nice to see movies that are about the movie, and not about the fan service. Not worth owning IMHO, but was a good watch on the plane.

Ha, I watched that the other day too. Love Carpenter's work!

Checked out RZA's directorial debut with his 2012 "The Man with the Iron Fists" kung-fu tribute/homage on Blu-Ray format. The fight scenes are impressive. Lucy Liu's fight scenes are better in TMwtIF than what's shown in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Vol.1 flick. The deleted scenes (clocking at over 24 minutes easily) will delve further into the backstory leading to the events that take place within the film.

I wouldn't be surprised if a proper sequel is made with the way how it ends.

Considering it's a Disney film, the movie was a lot better than expected. Don't get me wrong, MacNicol is a weird choice for hero material (good actor though) and there were dialogue and pacing issues, but as movies about Dragons go I've seen far worse. Like that trash with Sean Connery or Reign of Fire: blech.

Jackie Chan's "friend" Michael (the guy fucking around with the stuffed monkey) at the beginning of The Protector (1985, Jackie Chan, US edit) is a good example of this.

Golden Axe is the ultimate COMPELLING 1980s REVENGE PREMISE masterclass, imo. Sit through the attract mode three times and you'll have four times the motivation!

Didn't expect much coming into this, was much more enjoyable than I was expecting. Action-packing, nice acting, cute girl. Also X( all over.

Watched Captain America and I liked it. It was a fairly memorable movie to me. I really dug it. Caught the end of The Cave the other day. Didn't see much of it but it seemed to have a heavy Alien vibe. Watched Season of The Witch, thought it was pretty lame. Seemed like they were just dragging around that girl in prison cart for most of the movie. I watched One for the Money because I thought the girl on the cover was extremely cute and she was holding handcuffs. But it ended up being some lame really bad chick flick or something. Watched Star Trek Nemesis, I liked it but didn't really know the back story for the bad guy captain dude who was dying so it kind of annoyed me. Then started Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol which I thought was a pretty decent cool spy movie. Started Casa de mi Padre and fell asleep about ten minutes into it.

Guys, Red Sonja is shit!

It's so badly directed, so badly written, painfully miscast and terribly acted, it's quite abominable. CT Destroyer was a little campy, but Fleischer did a reasonable job of it: Sonja is like he couldn't be bothered to expend an ounce of effort.

Even the Morricone score... it's lazy. It loops really quickly and is kind of irritating.

I'm not surprised Schwarzenegger said it's the worst film he ever made, he's right, and that's saying something taking into account Hercules in New York. They consigned the Robert E. Howard fantasies to an early grave with this one.

I still enjoy Red Sonja and have an immense passion for anything sword & sorcery (before the 90s), but yeah, it's hard to deny its shortcomings. To be fair, Sonja really isn't a Howard creation, as the comic was only loosely based on the short Howard wrote. I'm just sad that a proper Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, Kull, or even some of his horror shorts weren't made into films during the heyday. If I recall correctly, a Solomon Kane movie came out the past year or so. I can't imagine how dreadful that must be.

Watched a Blue Underground DVD of "The Cannibal Man." Holy crap, Drauch. You should see this German-Spanish production. It works on different levels: as a B-movie, foreign psychotronic drive-in schlock a la The Driller Killer, Maniac, and Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer, as well as New York Gothic a la Taxi Driver. I went in expecting nothing, so I think it was the surprise of finding something decently made that made it better than it really is, but I still recommend it as a low-budget Horror-Drama (it isn't a Thriller)

Yes, Slither has some great practical EFX + a bit of CG EFX to move the story along. The actress whom is portrayed as a teen gal in it, plays another teen gal character in The Collector flick as well.

If you watch Parasitic, it almost follows the same "master host controlling slave zombies" recurring recycled premise started with Slither.

Yeah, same. I wouldn't have minded the fictitious bits put in for suspense if they weren't completely obvious, even to someone who knew nothing about the Canadian Caper prior to the film. Spoils the illusion. Sorta like stunt work that's obviously not done by the star. Still, most of the movie was pretty solid.

Also, we don't need another George Clooney, Ben Affleck.

Went and saw "A Good Day To Die Hard" tonight, and after hearing some *really* bad reviews about it, I thought that it was decent. It certainly didn't make me sorry I was there, and I thought it was a decent enough ride for my cash. No need to walk out and *demand* a future-pass-in-apology from the theater's management ::cough"TheAmerican"cough::.

It's certainly not a movie one needs to rush out and see, but if you can watch it at a cheapie theater for $2-3 or so, you'll be happy enough. If you go in expecting anything epic like the original was, of *course* you'll be disappointed...but if you just want a ride of an action movie with some decent lines and some really good vehicular stunt work at the beginning, you'll certainly be pleased.

If as you say, it has some decent lines, that will already be more than the entirety of Live Free or Die Hard, so that's something I suppose.

My Recent Watchings

(John Carpenter's) Vampires. Definitely not up to his other stuff, although the formula seems to be there. Maybe b/c it's not the 80's I'm not nearly as forgiving of it. I like James Wood, but not necessarily in this roll. I guess overall it was kind Meh. Had Sheryl Lee not shown her tits so much in the Twin Peaks movie I might have liked seeing her ass a bit more.

Well, you're at least partly on the money there...I fully admit that I was taken in by the *completely* deceptive marketing of the movie in this country. That's not necessarily my fault, you understand, but you're right in that the movie shouldn't suffer for the poor marketing.

That wasn't the major issue, though that was certainly part of it. The picturesque landscape shots were very nice and *extremely* European, but that's not really what I was there to watch it for. Still, beautiful shots, those.

No, "The American" was deplorable mainly for two reasons: first, they absolutely *could not* get away from sex scenes and nudity (and while I don't object to a bit, this was *way* over the top), and second, I'm not sure that it's possible to make a movie that was more slow-paced and boring than that. My GF and I walked out after, say, an hour, and that's an hour of my life I would direly like to have back. Horrible movie, poor marketing or not.

Well, yeah...that's kind of what I meant. I readily admit to being a sucker for Alan Arkin's dry wit/delivery, but he delivered quite a bit, as did Goodman. Not that I'm calling it a comedy, but the levity, especially early on, helped the cause.

I really enjoyed "Argo" on several levels. Is it the deepest film I've ever seen? Certainly not...but it was extremely enjoyable, and I'm not a Ben Affleck fan at all. Fair's fair, though: he did a good job, and of course the supporting cast was really terrific, IMHO.

I thought it was good, but I like Anton Corbjin. I guess I won't recommend his first feature film Closer then, which is a top movie.

I've decided to switch to the CMoon rating system - so for tonights entertainment:

The Corridor - *
From the writing on the back of the case it sounded promising, but in the end I wasn't even paying attention to it anymore, nonsensical but stylish in places. It's a horror film but it doesn't seem to know what its own story actually is.

The Loved Ones - ***
Great work, do not dismiss it as some have, with the label 'torture porn'. It's a good solid horror film with some shocks and a lot of dark humour, the lead actress does an amazing job with solid work from everyone else. There's a bit of a disconnected sub-plot in there too, but I didn't find it out of place, and honestly you need it to break up the rest of the film which would be too short and too intense without it.

Cool World - *****
I've always liked this one, and I'm into double digits now for the times I've seen it. A very unpopular film generally, so take my rating with a pinch of salt, but it just oozes style. The downsides - the acting isn't going to win any oscars although it makes sense in the context of the film, and the story is simple. The upsides - the story is simple, the Cool World itself is an amazing piece of imagination with top notch animation, and it's entertaining all the way through. Also has Kim Basinger in her prime, she looks as good drawn as she does in person. Honestly this one could do with the Blu-Ray treatment, but I don't have very high hopes of that happening.
