Best vertical shmups in the $150 range?

Post by daskrabs »

I'd like to add a few more reasonably priced vert shooters to my pcb collection. What are your favorites in this price range?

There are lots of quality Psikyo and Seibu SPI titles around that price range.

And MVS stuff is usually cheaper, if you prefer frying over a jungle. :P

If I recall, I think that's roughly the price range I purchased my Raiden DX board in, although I don't know what the prices for those look like these days.

^ Dragon Blaze for sure!

Truxton is another - and Dogyuun is a must if you're into Toaplan shooters.

Viper Phase 1 USA can be grabbed in that range as well, but tough to find.

Lastly, i recently got 19XX in that range, but I'm not sure it's as good as the shooters I already mentioned IMHO.

Yes, tatsujin-ou/Truxton 2, dogyuun and ibara are all fantastic. ibara is fairly easy to find, dogyuun and tatsujin-ou are 'around' and not that hard to find.

Truxton 2 is one of those PCBs that constantly eludes me - and I'm pretty sure it exceeds the $150 range. (but If I'm wrong - let me know where I can get it! :D )

I'd offer these, going from newer to older:

Dragon Blaze
Strikers 1945 III (also known as Strikers 1999)
Strikers 1945 II
Raiden DX (under $150 if you're lucky), get the version with built in autofire, make sure it is the older board (newer one has cheaper parts)
Sky Shark/Flying Shark
Twin Cobra

Hope this helps,
F

The shmups on the Taito G-Net arcade platform are cool in the $150 range & under:

Takumi's Night Raid on the Taito G-Card format

Success' Psyvariar Medium Unit G-Card

Success' Psyvariar Revision G-Card (fixes up some issues with the Psy-MU release)

Alfa System's Shikigami No Shiro G-Card

If $$$$ is no problem, then sourcing a rare Taito G-Card of Ray Crisis in the $900-$1,000 range is the going rate these days -- of course, there's a cheaper alternative method of playing RC on a G-Net setup that doesn't break the bank nor your wallet (requires a version 3 modded G-Net mobo though).

Daioh

You can find me a Dimahoo for $150? Sweet!

OutZone is around that range too I think.

If you are okay with conversions or phoenixed CPS2, yes, Dimahoo is usually $150. Even Great Mahou Daisakusen goes around that on Yahoo Japan.

Outzone is definitely closer to $200 from what I've seen it go for in the last year or so.

Phoenixed sure...conversions, nah

Nothing against people rolling their own ROMs, but to sell as an original, that's touch and go.

Many moons ago, I saw an eBay auction for a barebones Seibu Kaihatsu SPI USA region cartridge of Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. up for sale. Won it for a mere $20.50 (that's just a mere 82 U.S. quarters coin denomition in all!) + a tad bit more for S&H. Best deal for such an SPI arcade shmup title that I've gotten barnone.

You might recall of a past sales thread where another fellow shmupper whom sold a USA region SPI cart of VP1-U.S.A. for a mere $50.00 USD here on the Trading section sometime back.

And heard about a fella selling a barebones Cave ESP.ra.de. PCB for a mere $75.00 USD on another classic arcade game site. The guy didn't know the actual second-hand going rate of it but just simply want to get rid of it & get a bit of $$ back on his initial PCB purchase. Crazy but true.

As the ol' saying goes: Just gotta be at the right place at the right time to score such a cheap-ass arcade shmup PCB deal. It can be done.

Gonna be somewhat more than that to deal with the hassle and ship it, though

Anyway, $150 seems like it should be a good price to aim for...but...
