Re: PS4 Holiday 2013 Release, Won't Block Used Games
I dunno, people have been predicting the death of the console forever now. There are a lot of people out there who are happy playing games like Call of Duty and they're not gonna play it on their PC. It seems kind of like asking if this year is going to finally be the year of the Linux Desktop (e.g., based on a reading of a relatively small and enthusiastic tech-oriented community).
Is the death of handhelds near? Probably. And I'm sure eventually it'll be more accepted to merge phones with set-top boxes, but that's not really the norm yet either.

Well, that was pretty uninformative. It's going to be shitty if even PS1 and PS2 games are streaming-only, which so far sounds like the plan (hopefully this is wrong and they just didn't say anything about disc-based BC because it would detract from the STREAMAN AND SHARAN push). If PS3 games are limited to what's on PSN, that's almost worthless to me since most of my PS3 library isn't on PSN.
Of course there's still potential for it to be a great system; I just haven't seen anything yet to indicate that it's actually likely to happen.

Nice New Statesman article on the embarrassing PlayStation IV non-announcement. http://www.newstatesman.com/culture/201 ... n-4-launch
While you'll not catch me moaning about the 16-bit generation, I still think the 32/64 bit era was possibly the most exciting. And I think the Dreamcast/Gamecube/PS2 era was also amazing. But I just don't understand how anyone with the slightest interest in videogames could be in the least excited about the last console generation. I guess they're the same people who claim to be film fans and go out and buy Spiderman 3 and Prometheus on Blu Ray. Not exactly discerning customers. There were a few gems (No More Heroes, Sin And Punishment 2, Vanquish, the CAVE ports), but seriously.
Of course, the console itself is largely irrelevant, it's the developers the console can attract. If Sony can turn this around, then the Playation 4 might be able to avoid becoming the dumping ground for shovel-ware that its predecessor quickly became.

Really, with this much horsepower there's no excuse for them not to offer it.
Ditto for the other stuff - it'd be astonishing if in the post-Steam era somebody decided to release a console without background downloads and instant resume (sleep mode on a dedicated games box - makes sense to me)

You are right, all it took to convince those of little intellect who suck at math to buy a 360 with "Shitty-ass PC architecture" was to (knowingly) rush an inherently flawed system to the market and make it seem cheaper/better value, while it really wasn't: Basic 360 had no hdmi, no wifi adapter ($100) no cordless controller ($50), no hdd ($100+) online gaming behind a paywall ($50 per year), HD DVD Player add-on sold for $199. And it worked. Mostly in America. Quelle surprise.trap15 wrote:Shitty-ass PC architecture, and a price likely to be at least FIVE-HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE U.S. DOLLARS.

Re: PS4 Holiday 2013 Release, Won't Block Used Games
From a superficial perspective, yes it has. There is still room for some growth and a handful of masterpieces. There remains so much unfinished business it's not even funny. But like all great things, this growth takes time to occur. The next gen has reached the evolutionary limit of video gaming.
We could very well see a true successor to Ion Storm's Deus Ex, just like Half Life seemed to appear out of fucking nowhere in the months following it's release. People back then, much like many in this thread, saw beta screens and laughed their asses off. They assured themselves that the game would suck and nothing could surpass the eye-opening greatness of DOOM.
And yet, here we are. The game and its sequel have legions of followers, and it remains one of my most memorable FPSs to date.
Deus Ex is just ONE such example. All volcanoes become dormant for a while. It would be kinda fucked up to expect otherwise. These games which deserve a proper sequel treatment are much like dormant volcanoes in this respect. The industry can only put out so much garbage before developers worth their salt get so fed up that they realize that if they don't make a change, no one will. The pressure and tension which builds due to over-saturation of shit games, corrupt studios and deceitful marketing (Ex: "IGN- "NOTHING WILL EVER BE THE SAME. A++++++" on the back of a fucking JRPG box.) is a grand contributor to this eruption, I'm sure.
Platinum Games seems like a step in the right direction. Just be patient.

Re: PS4 Holiday 2013 Release, Won't Block Used Games
My impression:
While the media seems to bewail the "lackluster" PS4 announcement, the "media" actually doesn't matter in the single slightest ounce - they are just a bunch of idiots who don't really know what they're talking about.
My observations place the PS4 as much better than the PS3 - there is simply more going on here as a game console (than the PS3 trying to be a "home entertainment device"). I think Sony knew something of that, and I don't think we can really doubt their ability to make a console with widespread appeal.
Microsoft is probably going to heavily invest in Kinect, which is not going to turn into the cash cow they think it will be. I think that means the PS4 could probably swoop in and siphon a portion of MS's userbase. Not to mention the Steam Gabecube on the horizon, which will probably do more to fracture the new xbox's support.

Sony lies every damn time with these things. Not once has a demo/tech thing they showed before the console was released lived up to the hype. And if you honestly believe MS is going to opt for some exotic custom hardware bullshit like Emotion Engine and Cell in their new console, you`re bound to be severely disappointed as none of the rumors point to that. Both Orbis and Durango are based on the "shitty-ass PC architecture".

P.S. This thread is really something. If only some folks here spent as much time playing videogames as they do whining and bitching about them... Who knows, you might even discover new gaming experiences and expand your taste. Nostalgia is a deeply reactionary sentiment, one that must be constantly fought and suppressed.

PC architecture isn't shitty, its usually the operating system and lack of a single spec which will be addressed with both MS and Sony offerings.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
