The Future is Now.

Really mixed feeling about drones. Regardless, I actually think this is a perfect application for drones--use robots to take out a dangerous individual without risking lives. Can't wait to hear all the paranoia talk from the Alex Jones crowd...

America is seemingly fighting wars from further and further away. 10 years ago you shot missiles from ships. Now you send robots.

Its more like war games, than war. I Can picture the guy controlling everything eating a big Mac and sipping on coke whilst he's going into combat

Kind of like how you respond to posts. This is about the drones moving into the backyard, to be used by local police forces...or didn't you get the briefing?

Anyway, it was about time. I don't see why they can't do this. They've been tracking people with IR from choppas for years, also, so it's nothing more than putting the pilot on the ground.

Update for those not clever enough to know the facts (also good of this site to confirm my suspicion that I'd heard of drones being used in manhunts before...because I remembered that episode from a few years back).

Guilty as charged. Never read the article. Seems effective. Thought at first its OTT, but if the shit works then i'm all for it.

Someone weaponized the helicopter kitty? It's only a matter of time before they gain zombie-sentience, and the zombie-cat-helicopter-apocalypse is upon us.

no, the future will be here when they fly a few drones over football games right after the national anthem.

fucking awesome that they caught this guy.

value your privacy? then don't go in fucking PUBLIC. same goes for cops now, they thought all this ubiquitous video technology in everyone's pocket didn't apply to them. they are loosing case after case for taking people's phones, Boston, Chicago. who wants to be next?

Where did you see that? As far as I know he's still at large, probably Metal Gear Solid 3'ing it out in the California wilderness.

Before money's spent on police drones, it needs to be spent on recording devices mounted on every police car and worn by every police officer.

I don't want police to be able to police everything, neither in my home nor in public. Drones can make that possible. There are other issues associated with their use, but that's the by far most important one.

this doesn't make it possible. it makes it less likely that you will detect them doing it.

Actually it does make it possible to a much larger degree. You do realize analyzing videos automatically is already possible to some extent?
Of course, the added "shit, they might be watching" is bad, too, but that's a comparatively minor concern in comparison.

I really not happy how an email provider can turn over everything after 6 months in the US, without a warrant. I have an expectation of privacy in my email, I think everyone does. This needs to be changed.

If this drone thing really gets to you all so much, you should be much more concerned about street cameras with facial recognition. Years of data to mine whenever you do get into trouble.

I personally hate street cameras a lot, though drones are worse. Why? You can avoid cameras because they are generally stationary. But of course, in principle they're about as shite as drones are.

I don't think they are going to be able to search drone footage for faces of people who were not direct targets of surveillance.

But maybe I'm wrong. I guess if than angle is low enough off the horizon it's possible. But why? Steet cameras are everywhere.

Yeah, on principle I don't see drones as any different than any other stuff they use, and if it saves lives, go for it.

If you still believe there is any real privacy and that the government can't know all about what you do, you're naive. If you think the government really cares about what you do or has the time to check that out, you're even more naive.

I'm actually hoping drones mean an end to major scale wars. We already know that citizens always lose when it comes to war, so if robots can take out the relevant players instead of costing the lives of 10's or 100's of thousands of people at some minor cost to our rights, go fucking for it.

And speaking of our rights, let's at least be realistic, our rights are illusory. They have and will continue to be violated, and can be canceled at any time as the circumstances may be. So your perception of your rights may have shifted in a negative way, but in fact you have lost nothing and you live in a world that is safer. Boo Hoo.

I don't want an omniscient, omnipotent government. They are not benevolent.

They have the data to mine, just in case. But they "don't care" about you? Just keep your head down and hope that they continue to not care.

Just because one aspect of society improves does not mean we have to give up on the problems which exist in another. Of course, with that being said, I'm sure that we would all benefit if people in general and policy makers in particular would look at hard data and use it to prioritize action on particular issues.

Why are these drones pissing everyone off? There's no such thing as privacy anymore. You can't protect what no longer exists. There's tons of survelance methods that they haven't even disclosed to the public yet. How do I know this? Because I live in the most goddamned paranoid country on the fucking planet.

I would disagree, although it's only a very small part of the population that manages to stay off the radar. That doesn't mean we can't be mad that we're moving further and further away from the possibility of getting any of it back though. As it stands now (or previously, I suppose), if you're crazy enough you can still run off into the woods and live like a 21st century Daniel Boone without the government being any the wiser.
