I know shortcuts have to be taken in sci-fi to make it more fun (fireless, soundless space explosions wouldn't be very exciting to watch, I agree), but that particular scene is where it rolled over firmly into the "completely unrealistic" territory. It's most unfortunate that it happened in a filler scene that didn't even have to be there to begin with.
You do realize this is a movie where people shoot lightning out of their fingers by getting really really angry, right?

As the article points out, in the hands of Disney Star Wars will receive the same treatment as the Marvel property. Never ending barrage of light-weight entertainment incoming.
However, at this point I am unable to conjur any emotions regarding this. For me (and many others) Star Wars pretty much died with Episode I (lost its magic).

The original trilogy was like a fairy tale, and just like a fairy tale it needed no sequels or spin-offs (which we learned the hard way).
In my mind, the world of Star Wars consits of Star Wars (aka. A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. That's it.

On the bright side, Episode I will make everything else actually tolerable.

It died when the teddy bears with spears slaughtered what the Emperor described as an entire legion of my best troops.

And the teddy bears died due to the Death Star II's wreckage raining down on Endor in the Heir to the Empire novel (which takes place a mere five years after the events that take place in RoTJ).

It's a safe bet to say that the upcoming Star Wars Episode 7 movie will be slated for a May 2015 release date (as it was with the previous six SW films).

Again and again - imperial forces fighting by the book vs guerilla warfare on the enemy's turf. I liked the snowspeeder vs AT-AT action better, cinematically and all, but the song remains the same.
Do the people who have such a beef with Ewoks and Willow are the same ones who have problems with anuses in manga, anime and video games?
On the other hand, such fears can be beneficial. At least in Japanese pop culture, the cartoony characters tend to have all fingers. (And people over there had to buy this album imported, which I suppose was cheaper... or such was the news back in 1995.)

RotJ was actually a horror film. No one ever expects the teddy bears to rise.

As for JJ Abrams directing an episode VII, I'll be cautiously optimistic. Matters certainly couldn't get any worse. I quite liked the Star Trek reboot, although many hold the opposite opinion. He also has a good feel for the early Spielberg vibe (Super 8, but also Cloverfield to an extent).

It's not the best, but it has its share of awesomeness. The Jabba segment, the speeder chase through the forest, the final showdown w Vader & Emperor. The giant fucking squid talking nonsense.

On a related SW note released today (2/06/2013) by the Associated Press:

------------------------
Extra 'Star Wars' films planned

Disney is mining The Force for even more new films.

Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger said Tuesday (2/05/2013) that screenwriters Larry Kasdan & Simon Kinberg are working on stand-alone "Star Wars" movies that aren't part of the (upcoming) trilogy that's in the works.

"There has been speculation about some stand-alone films that have been in development, and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few stand-alone films," Iger told CNBC.

Iger said the movies would be based on "great 'Star Wars' characters that are not part of the overall saga." The films would be released during the six year period of the new trilogy, which starts in 2015 with "Star Wars: Episode VII."

Disney confirmed last month that "Star Trek" director J.J. Abrams will direct the seventh installment of the "Star Wars" saga. Disney bought "Star Wars" maker Lucasfilm last year for more than $4 billion.

The last "Star Wars" trilogy, a prequel to the original films was released from 1999 to 2005. (Lucas released the SW prequels in both traditional 35mm and superior digital DLP formats during that same timeframe as well.)

Just read that Stuart Freeborn has died. 98, pretty good age to go. He made Chewbacca, Yoda and Jabba! Also worked on the Dawn of Man sequence in 2001.

Back on topic, I'll stick my neck out on this one and say that these new Star Wars films will suck big eggs.

I'd rather see stand-alone TV, but not sure what Star Wars would be like on a TV budget. They'd have to hire good writers/directors and passable effects teams... basically the polar opposite of the SW paradigm until now.

Seriously, I'd pay much money to see that. Bryan Cranston can be Han Solo.

Stringer Bell, obviously. My man-crush aside, no one rocks the black mustache these days like Idris Elba. Although a case might be made for Omar, purely for the LGBT tension w/ Luke & Leia.. possibly Chewy.

They already made that show.

It was called "Firefly"

Of course I was being facetious in that previous post.

Here is an actual example of Star Wars on a TV budget. Enjoy!

Well, it was meant to capitalize on its fad. But it felt quite different, maybe a mix of 2001 and Forbidden Planet. It's a flawed movie, but a great concept. I am actually have greater expectations for its remake (by the same director of Tron Legacy) than for any new Star Wars.

There is no mystery left in the SW universe. Making more movies is just going to dilute whats already there. Unless a new mystery is born and its all exciting again. But really... whos gonna write that kind of shit these days?
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I got to say that with the rumoured Boba Fett film being set between Empire and Jedi... at least it would look like Star Wars (in a cgi way). I always though Lucas should have "franchised out" the SW universe.

...still be rubbish though... Who the hell are they going to get to play a young Han Solo?
