Just figured I'd pop in to let everybody know that the process of cracking the Neo Geo X has begun, and the unit has already been opened up for the first time:

Long story short, the hardware inside is a modder's wet dream! Stay tuned...

The fact that this doesn't support high score saving is inexcusable.

What's the point? Just get an OUYA instead once it's released. Or if you want a cheap handheld with homebrew, get a PSP (afaik, all models can be hacked at this point). You can actually get both an Ouya and a PSP for the price of one of these.
Added bonus: If you play Neo Geo on PSP via emulation, you can even save your highscores.

the point is that the AES replica looks gorgeous, the sticks are nice and all things "wrong" right now are software based. If somebody can eventually fix the emu (v-sync lock + linedoubling instead of scaling to 480p), it's a really, really nice system.

(He actually recommends using a PSP like I did for emulating Neo Geo) :D

Neo Geo X appears to be awful in every regard.

The buttons on the handheld aside, he is just complaining about emulation quality, a software based flaw.

He also says that the screen is bad, that it doesn't even have any SD card slot cover, that it feels flimsy and light. The 90-day warranty is pretty funny, too (instead of 1 or 2 years like any decent company would grant).
Emulation quality aside, the games are gimped, too. As you can see in his video, Magician Loard lacks the intro.

The handheld part is very badly designed, too: You need to connect it with the docking station to charge. The system doesn't have any sleep mode or save-function either. You also have to wonder why a 16:9 screen was used. Furthermore (software related, yes) apparently you can't add credits when playing games (WTF?).

So for $200 you get a nice looking but very overpriced and cheaply built single purpose emulator (with bad picture, terrible audio, slowdown and input lag) that really has nothing to do with a real Neo Geo and isn't even made by SNK.

I don't see how the verdict on this could be anything but "AVOID".

you don't. charges fine without it. After all, wasn't there a $120 version planned with the dock ?

likely because they're much cheaper than custom made 4:3 ones.
apparently you can't add credits when playing games (WTF?).
and you cannot on a real AES either.

Well, that's just laziness, not a problem with the game itself. There are 2 versions of Magician Lord: one with the intro and one without. It's annoying they seemingly just picked a random ROM, and it turned out to be the latter.

As for the handheld itself, the quality is not bad and is comparable to that of the NGPC. The buttons on top aren't the usual type of handheld buttons but they don't feel shoddy. Everything feels rugged to me so far. The screen is fine but has a worse viewing angle than systems like the PSP and DS.

You could bootleg Neo Geo games however you want. The difference here is that the Neo Geo X is authorized and that the full setup is relatively affordable. It's disappointing that the system is not nearly all it can be but I, and the many fans who've crept back into the woodwork, would rather support its growth than that of an illegal format.

But Lukemorse is an idiot. The product is awful for many reasons, price being the biggest.

The word is that it's running FBA, and files for other emulators are present, including a playstation bios.

Even though he recycles old capacitors and sands JAMMA connectors with sandpaper, I have to agree with him on this one.

Why would anyone buy this when the PSP is an excellent portable emulation device?

I'm more amazed that no one has had the Neo Geo balls to make a handheld that is actually something worth playing.

Every handheld that comes out has cheaped out on some major component whether it be controls, software, screen, sound, or even casing. Then no one buys it because it's not as great as it could have been. While the PSP may have some decent emulation, the screen and controls are garbage for anyone taking their emulated games seriously.

This and the Pandora were at least able to get some good controls, but the screens are crap from what I've read and seen in videos.

I can't get past this, really. It is nice that they have some good physical controls, and it's nice that the system is a basically capable design which just needs some software work. But the main draw of this was supposed to be that it's got the Neo Geo branding and "experience." If you can look past that, though, it does look like a much better idea than going out and paying a bunch of random people for custom work (and lots of people would never think to do this anyway, let alone actually do it). So I suppose they can be forgiven...but will Sony overlook that BIOS?

did anybody replace the FBA config file in the emu to fix the output resolution ?

http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthrea ... ost3470909

I was wondering if anybody could guide me through the process ? Just open up the machine, remove the MicroSD card, put in onto a PC, replace the file and put it back in ??

Whoa, it really was bundled with Ninja Master's, no less. That and the fact it's the only game I've ever fancied getting Neo Geo for make me feel pretty smug.

In addition, SNK has demanded TOMMO immediately cease all sales of the “SNK NEOGEO X Arcade Stick” product being sold separately from the NEOGEO X GOLD Plug and Play Console, and remove the “SNK NEOGEO X Arcade Stick” product from store shelves and online retailers.
Hmm that's weird. Are they any good (comparable to the old one)? Only about $50 and works on the PC seems like a pretty good deal... that won't be available for long. (Well existing stock will probably end up on eBay, or maybe the retailers will even just tell SNKP to sod off with their demands).
