RQ: Ikaruga Noob Tips

Post by BIOS »

Can anyone give me any tips for ikaruga (360), I'm a total Noob at the game.
I'm playing with a LS-30. What's the arcadet button layout ? At the min I'm using:

S-P-*
R-*-*

S= shoot P= polarity R=release power.

(mod edit - fixed thread title, see strategy section guidelines)

I think S-P-R on a single line is the original layout.

As for starting advices, if you want to chain :

- learn ennemies placement, play on top of screen according to that placement.
- stop shooting when you know you have no ennemies to take down
- release power is not a panic bomb, use it as a regular weapon
- dont try and chain the whole level at the beginning, you'll kill yourself too often. Better let some ennemies go and chain when you know how to.

You're right, original uses A+B to release power. I find it quite hard to witch polarity without releasing though.

This is actually really important. One thing that helped me when I first started playing Ikaruga (and still does when I mess up on, say, stage 4) was realizing that the easiest way to deal with a panic situation is usually NOT shooting or releasing. Doing nothing but eat bullets is a great way to catch your breath, and can help you recover from a mistake.

Broadly speaking, Ikaruga is very much affected by the player's choices. With VERY little exception, the game is made easier or harder based only how the player handles a given section-- Ikaruga has no 'rank' whatsoever with the exception of the last two bosses, which scale in difficulty if the player survives longer against them.

If you're just starting out, focus on trying to understand the layout of the stages and learning to move around without dying. Chaining well will force you to play the game more aggressively, so my reccomendation would be easing into a scoring pathway over time, as your abilities and comfort level increase.
