Speaking briefly of Boorman's Excalibur, is there a preferable DVD release to have?

I didn't appreciate the movie in high school, but I probably will now that I am infinitely less scrutinizing.

I have to say while I didnt quite hate Hurt Locker - 2 things annoyed me - first of all the trailer showed the best bit and totally spoiled it (when he pulls the wires and its actually 3 bombs etc.) - and also the fvkin ridiculous 'woo ha/fuck yeah' music when it shows him at the end deciding 'fuck yeah immma go back to warz!!!!!!!'

Snake In The Eagle's Shadow

always been one of my fave traditional Kung-Fu movies, I also realised that it has the space disco classic 'Magic Fly' by Space in the soundtrack and at the very start - brilliant

Survive Style 5+. A movie that I never knew the title to, and fell asleep watching many years ago. But at least I found the weird movie with Vinnie Jones in a pink airplane. So its a movie with 5 stories, 1 a wife keeps getting killed and coming back, 2 a hypnotist and the gal he's fucking who happens to make commercials(very stupid ones at that, but none the less funny) 3 a family who's going to see the hypnotist's show, 4 a group of idiots who break into houses and steal things, and the last story is about a hitman from london who is hired by one from Japan. Strange brightly colored movie that all the stories end up coming together. All the music in the movie though is in english with the movie ending with Cake's rendition of I Will Survive. A movie that was strange and funny and at times depressing. Still worth seeing I think.

Alas, I don't have a blu-ray player. It's on my "things to get when I have lots of cash" list, since I'm a sucker for high picture quality.

PS3 used to be the easy way, but usable units are getting very cheap now.

Capricorn One - 7/10

Late 70s thriller about a faked landing on Mars, good performances all round. Hadn't seen it for a while but it's aged well, black helicopters are still black.

I am tempted to watch this now just for shits and giggles. Or maybe it's sheer madness that draws me.

although I legitimately enjoyed the Super Mario Bros movie :(

And yeah, SF was a bad movie, but it had Raul Julia, so it is enjoyably delicious.

One of these years I'll have to spring for one. Though I shudder at the thought of rebuilding my collection.

In any event, I just ordered Excalibur, Krull, and Dragonslayer for some good ol' swords-n-sorcery time. As well as a few cheap laughs at these movies' expenses.

Blitz - 7/10

Decent if a little formulaic, even though you can see the ending coming a mile away it doesn't make it any less satisfying.

I think you'll find Dragonslayer cleverer and more cynical than you remember in your childhood. Krull on the other hand, yeah.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I remember the wizard saying "no weapons can harm me" and immediately getting stabbed to death, and the hero saying "Blacksmith have you ever made a weapon?"
Which is still the funniest line I can recall in the entire movie.

Born Undead - 3/10

I thought the story (if not the script) was good, the effects were good in places, the opening scene particularly brutal. The rest was film school grade, some of the actors were so wooden you could have touched them for luck, and the picture quality was terrible.

Motorway. A movie about stopping a getaway driver and feature some nice tuner cars, a Nissan Skyline R32 for one, and a very nice Audi A6(I think its that, not completely sure) and some fantastic camera work that I've not really seen done elsewhere. Also the chase scenes are quite good at that and you get a sense of speed and a story that isn't just tacked on to make the chases seem like they are there. But best of all I really liked being able to put the music I heard to scenes and overall the soundtrack really fit the movie. 8/10 because I felt it was a little too short.

Dragonslayer is awesome. One of my favorite Disney produced movies. They don't dick around with fluff and fairies and all that shit, surprisingly even showing a bit of blood. One of the best Sword & Sorcery movies in my opinion, as well as one of my favorite movie posters that I snagged in the collecting days. The only "funny" thing is the Dragonslayer is a young Peter MacNicol, the goofball from Ghosbusters II.

With all this talk I rewatched Dragonslayer (streaming on netflix.) Can't agree about its greatness, but it is surprisingly understated and direct in its approach to the fantasy genre. It also keeps things restrained, which is nice.

As the movie finished up, and realizing I hadn't seen this in 20 years, I realized I needed a new rating system that cut out all objectivity/empirical evidence:

*: A movie of some kind; I'd prefer not to see it.
**: I enjoyed watching this movie but can think of many other things I'd rather do than see it a second time.
***: An enjoyable film worth watching a second time.
****: A great film that one could stomach perhaps 5 times before growing completely bored of.
*****: A complete and total milestone; successive viewing only enrich my life experience. This film completes me.

Under this rating system, I'm sure no one will complain when I give Dragonslayer a 3, or maybe a 2 and 1/2. I never need to see this film again, but I'm glad I revisited it. Who knows, maybe once more in the retirement village..

That's probably one of the best rating systems I've seen, because it doesn't make half the scale useless [eg, a 3 is not a bad movie like with most scales].

That's a fantastic scale. Will be using that from now on. By that scale, even "bad" movies can get 5 stars, and that makes it even better

The Helpers - 5/10

It doesn't do anything spectacularly badly, or spectacularly well really. Fairly run of the mill 'people get trapped and killed in horrible ways' film. This time it's in a motel, whatever. Low bodycount.
