What genre of music is this?

Post by BareKnuckleRoo »

Really random question here: I'd like to know if this style of music has a name or anything and is actually a genre, if there's any groups or whatnot that actually produce something like it. What I'm talking about is the music from the BBC TV adaptation of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Not the opening music specifically (Journey of the Sorcerer) I'm talking about the rest of the music used throughout the series. I know that Paddy Kingsland was the composer, but I really love the instrumentation of that early 80s synthy stuff, and I wish I could find more like it but I've had absolutely no luck finding anything that sounds like it (aside from that tie-in soundtrack that they produced with the guy who voiced Marvin). Is it just considered early electronic music? Where can I find more? Help!

80s Boogie a la Paul Hardcastle:

"Rain Forest"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKTAJkVFvCI

"King Tut"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KS9_whG2xA8

It was going into the beginnings of Freestyle and Hi-NRG Latin with bits and bops of Italo and Euro Disco 8)

Here's a Boner Electro from the 80s:

Speaking of Euro Disco, I really dig a few instrumentals by Patrick Juvet:

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop actually has quite a history of producing incredible music. There's a great double album of some of the works from the early years that's a must have in my mind. I'm particularly fond of Delia Derbyshire's music. There are plenty of videos on YouTube of her tunes. There's also this great clip of her talking about how she put tracks together:

There's also an album of hers that is amazing, but there were only 500 LPs made, so it's a bit difficult to find, although it's not usually too expensive if you can find it.

Boards of Canada are amazing. I really wish they would release some more of their music but apparently they are content with living in the Scottish Wilderness sharing their music exclusively with their friends.

Check out Com Truise

80's style with a modern sensibility.

Just search him on Last.fm, and go through the hits for 'similar artists'. Enjoy!

I could list more artists, but that should get you started.

Also, just google search 'synthwave', 'coldwave', 'synthpop', 'HI-NRG', 'Italo Disco'.

But ya, if you are after good old 80's style synth music, talk to me next time you come out to a meet. 8)

Search on YouTube for 'nightcore'

I think you'll find it's very similar and you'll also enjoy it immensely.

Lovin' the Paul Hardcastle. The Dr Who stuff sounds like 70's electro to me. Most of the electro I know of has more of a 80's vibe.

"The only desire the Culture could not satisfy from within itself was one common to both the descendants of its original human stock and the machines [...]: the urge not to feel useless."

I.M. Banks, "Consider Phlebas" (1988: 43).
