I use avast free, since it allows itself to be loaded only after booting my system up, hence reducing startup timings. It's also quite easy to use, and while AVG was good, I stopped using it when I noticed it began increasing its memory usage.

You might want to also limit scripts in your browser. It can be annoying to have to whitelist all the sites you frequent, but JavaScript's a major vector for infection. There's the NoScript extension for Mozilla software, and probably other ways for other browsers.

While we're on the subject, is there any reliable script blocker for Firefox that works with Adblock Plus's top blacklists or has a blacklist that's equivalently strong and well updated? I usually leave on Adblock Plus for protection but sometimes feel guilty of helping destroy the online economy.

I don't mind seeing ads in return for good material and bandwidth usage, especially when they bring essential revenue to a site. I just want to disable any potentially dangerous scripts that may be run. Last I checked, NoScript—the most popular script blocker—has a rudimentary whitelist or blacklist that you have to fill out yourself (too much of a hassle for the former; too risky for the latter).
