It is just depressing to reach a Challenging Stage when you have a single ship and the piss gun.
This game is much tougher than its predecessor! It took me four credits to finally figure out the mechanics and break the 50k mark. I think I got this score on the sixth.
Anybody know what the deal is with the parts you can obtain? They appear in the lower-right corner, and carry over from one game to the next...

I think if you collect all of them (3 or 4 parts?) then you get another extra life.
A tough one. Tip - On Stage 1, let all the enemies come on screen then shoot the enemy second from the bottom right to get a special bonu§. (At least I think it was that one... ).
Once you get hit thats it, the initial gun is useless. I did enjoy when I had 5 baddies on my side with the powered up gun and taking it to the challenge stage.

btw is it just me or does the cover look like its says gradius?
Everything came together on this one despite some dumb mistakes. Gotta figure out the mechanics for spawning the bonus ship parts. And that wavy tractor beam (ship part with green trim) yields nice bonuses when you collect many dudes before shooting them all together.
First score after 3 credits, just to have something on the board and not skip the playing week. The hit detection seems somehwat off. I feel like I'm constantly getting hit by bullets that miss me by a mile.
It seems the way to trigger a bonus ship part is to kill a queen and then bring your score up to a 10k multiple, all within the same parsec and in that order. [Note that this also includes the case where killing the queen would result in your score exceeding the 10k multiple. Though I've only successfully tested in-flight queen kills (400 pts) at scores ending in 9700-9900, I think it might also work at 9600 for an in-flight or at 9900 for a stationary queen (100 pts).]
Anyway, to regularly set up this condition while at the same time maintaining an effective formation for the challenging stages would require more thought, planning, and practice than I am willing to invest. It's been fun in any event.
Edit: well, getting the first bonus ship before the second challenge isn't that hard. It gets a bit tricky when you are close to a 10k bound, haven't yet taken out the queen, and have plenty of bees in the way that could easily put you over the line early. Doubly so when you have a large spread and the queen is carrying something. I guess I'm just tired of working on it.
