Previous thread: 1
__________
Use whatever the defaults are in each version; this is usually 3 lives and extends at 150,000 and 400,000, but not always. Playing on the 2P side makes the game somewhat easier in at least the arcade and PlayStation versions.

Raiden is supposed to have checkpoints. For the arcade version, the new set 1 does have checkpoints, while the new set 2 (which is the old main set) doesn't; other sets typically don't have checkpoints, for some reason. For the PlayStation version, the Japanese version has checkpoints at all times, while the American version has a toggle that defaults to off; please enable checkpoints!

The Mega Drive conversion has a "Free" difficulty hidden in the code. This has similar behavior to Hard difficulty, but every enemy has way more health. To access it, use PAR codes 000858:0003 and 00086C:0003.

For some reason, the US release of the SNES conversion is different. sigh

If I cared enough, I'd just split all the conversions into a separate thread, which would also justify splitting at least the arcade and PlayStation versions by player side. Oh well.

Post scores in this format:

Code: Select all

VERSION - DIFFICULTY
NAME - SCORE - STAGE - PLAYER SIDE - AUTOFIRE - DETAILS
DETAILS is for what model of console and release of cart/disc, or what emulator and version. There are way too many sets of this game, so please note which one you used.

Similar to Cho Ren Sha, the arcade version (only?) refers to the final stage of a loop as the zeroth stage of the next: for example, what would be 1-8 is written as 2-0.

chum - 898,220 - 1-6 - 2P - Yes - MAME (No checkpoints)

No miss stages 1-3

Lots of stupid deaths on 1-4

Enter 1-5 with no powerups or bombs, still made it to the boss without dying despite having no idea what the fuck I'm doing (which, by the way, was a damn nice feeling.)

Bomb everything scary on 1-6 until the inevitable G/O

This game is badass. The level design, the music and atmosphere, and the lightning fast bullets...

Yo Aquas, the game is way, waaay easier with 2P. And give homing missiles a try, as they're just a lot more effective than straight ones.

A far-from-obvious but handy trick: switching weapons (or maybe just picking up a weapon) will reduce the total health of any on-screen boss. Very useful for the level 3 boat--just switch to laser at the last second and the boss will go down under a light spray.

Yeah I know it's easier on 2P. I just don't care. :) (Though maybe I should play 2P to avoid some frustration) I'll give homing another shot. I think I just felt like they were negligable cause I got my ass kicked (either way) when I tried them, heh.

And wow, that really works? That's cool, and probably worth doing if I was to switch to homing, for the transition into stage 4. Stage 3 boss is a bitch, especially the last "form"

this game, man.

from what i understand, checkpoints lead to a good chunk of score in this game, so there needs to be some hard rule. problem is, most of the arcade versions don't have checkpoints, and the raiden project has them disabled by default... but how do i know who played with what?

similarly, the differences between player sides are just like the differences between progear jp and us. clearly, i should be separating those?

i just don't know what to do.

Added a Very Easy board for the Project section. Was originally banned due to a misunderstanding.

Arcade version - Normal difficulty
Despatche - 849,980 - 1-5 - 2P - Yes - ShmupMAME v3.0b (No start back)

Whoa. After flailing away at Very Easy for days and days and days, I go back to the arcade version and this happens.

I should probably have a look at the FM Towns version, those "competition" modes sound like they might be cool.

Arcade version - Normal
Ruldra - 1,525,390 - 2-0 - 2P - Yes - ShmupMAME v3.0b

For the first time ever I no-miss to stage 6. Fully powered up and with 4 extends, I had everything to make it to the end...only to royally screw up on stages 6 and 7. Still make it to stage 8 at max power and with 1 extend, but couldn't make it halfway through the stage.

Several runs later and I've yet to do that again. I'm back to dying on stages 3, 4 and 5. This game is really pissing me off.

Finally!

Image

Arcade - Normal
Ruldra - 2,639,330 - 2-2 - 2P - Yes - ShmupMAME v3.0b

Made it to the final boss at full power and with 1 extend left, but decided to ignore the fight and rush to the safespot. A bullet hits me, maybe because of the bigger ship hitbox, and I rush to the safespot again begging that I don't get hit again. Bullets were flying all over me, I'm tense as fuck, but thankfully I survive and proceed to the 2nd loop.

Also had no qualms about bombing if things got even a bit harder, hence the relatively low score for an 1-ALL. Too often you hoard bombs for the end-of-level bonus and end up dying stupidly because of it.

Goodbye, horribly frustrating game. I'm not playing you again in a long time.

Wow! Great work man! Crazy hard game, awesome to see you get that clear.

Uh, just a final heads-up: at this point everyone knows that using the red ship makes the game harder, but I wasn't aware how hard it becomes.

I just had a run on the 1P side for fun and it's not just harder, the rank difference is massive. More enemies appear and the bullets are so much faster, it's crazy. Unless you want a challenge, you REALLY should stick with the blue ship.

I'd like to clear this game's first loop one of these days. Makin' progress. :P

PS1 Colonel Difficulty:

***

No deaths until 1-5, where things got out of hand quickly. I guess making it through 1/2 a loop isn't really an accomplishment, but I figured it's good to get a name on the board for now.

I feel like the blue weapon should only be exclusively used for the bosses, if that. A combination of blue+M-Missiles really wreaks havoc during boss fights, but is a nightmare to survive outside of them.
