Japan only for now, but hopefully we can get a US release down the line? VC output in the US is really crappy as of late so I'm not really holding my breath, but most of Naxat's library has gotten on there...

Will be out on the 12th for the like, 2 other people that have a JP 3DS.
For those curious, publisher is Kagadenshi.

Re: Recca on 3DS eShop
Nah, his first was Laserfight! for MSX. Recca is his first well-known STG though. I'd be really really excited if this came out on the US VC.

Re: Recca on 3DS eShop

SURELY You can get imports for 3DS as well!

Oh god, those comments. Why is it that stupid people so greatly outnumber the smart?Zeether wrote:http://www.siliconera.com/2012/12/04/ul ... l-console/
As for this release: Yay, region locking.
Solution A) Bend over and import a 3DS from Japan, get Japanese Nintendo banana points and use a proxy to buy Recca
Solution B) NES emulator and DS flashcard*
*Given the right circumstances, this is perfectly legal, too.

Is Vita effectively region-free, PSN-wise?
I'm so glad Zanac X Zanac FINALLY gets attention beyond the realm of game collecting.
Nintendo, on the other hand, dropped the ball miserably region-locking 3DS. Now the thing needs one hell of a system seller to catch my attention (granted, Shin MegaTen IV comes near).

Vita itself isn't region locked (and neither are physical games), but your PSN account is. However, it is possible to use foreign PSN stores, but you need a second memory card for that.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Is Vita effectively region-free, PSN-wise?

I'm so happy to see Recca getting some attention, specially on a download service. Can't wait to get it on my JP 3DS.

Those comments are made by bad people who deserve to be stoned. With rocks, not pot.
I'd love to see this come over, although I haven't updated my 3DS in forever [so no eShop] because Acekard updates are slow as fuck. I'm tempted to just see if I can find a DS Lite for cheap [they keep their value surprisingly well, unless the buttons have problems
] and just use that so I can keep my 3DS up to date.

Do any NES VC games preserve flicker (I assume most preserve slowdown).

Yes they do, but the resolution is slightly on the "crushing" side. o.oantron wrote:Do any NES VC games preserve flicker (I assume most preserve slowdown).

I'd love to see this over on US VC too, if only so more people can experience this wonderful game.

Has anyone on these forums discovered Recca thanks to this release?

Yep, I put it in my bookmarks to check out later. Do most emulators play this accurately?Obiwanshinobi wrote: Has anyone on these forums discovered Recca thanks to this release?
I would also much rather see a Wii or Wii U release, rather than 3DS, so I could play it on a TV.

Worked fine for me on Nestopia (where you can turn off the sprite limit so it's a bit easier on the eye). Played it on a CRT set to 120 Hz in 640x480 with scanlines on.
While we're at it, check out Blade Buster too.

this is the most frustrating topic. Every time I see it I'm reminded that Recca is not on my 3DS eshop.

Re: Recca on 3DS eShop
I would love to find some sort of an NES flash cart and throw this on it. Does anybody know anything about those things?
I was looking at SNES ones recently, and they were all expensive, not fully compatible with the whole library, and I couldn't figure out if they could save or not.

Re: Recca on 3DS eShop
Would be nice to be on the NA eShop.
Re: Recca on 3DS eShop
Both SNES and NES cartridges came with some enhancement chips, but in the case of the NES I think it was mostly mappers, with the occasional mapper chip also having some extra sound capabilities (sometimes rather complex as in the case of the enhanced sound on a few Japanese Namco titles), but I think these aren't found in the NTSC region games. I don't think Recca used anything more than a simple mapper.BazookaBen wrote:I would love to find some sort of an NES flash cart and throw this on it. Does anybody know anything about those things?

The complexity of adding a RISC core CPU such as found on the Super FX games would probably be significantly increased.
Re: Recca on 3DS eShop
Since IMO Recca is overhyped, I kinda understand the comments on that link.
Game looks ugly and gameplay wasn't that engaging to start with.
But hey I'm happy for those who are excited.

I think it compares extremely favorably with other NES "classics," and it's really actually quite impressive imo. Sure there's flicker out the ass, but it's hella fast.Kollision wrote:Since IMO Recca is overhyped, I kinda understand the comments on that link.

ya'know, I always assumed I would feel the same way.Kollision wrote: IMO Recca is overhyped
Recca took on a certain allure because of its limited availability and high price tag.
Shmups on the NES/FC don't interest me too much so I was never going to go out and buy an original Recca cart.
There was no way a Famicom game could be all that amazing, so I figured all the praise was blown out of proportion.
I have a general rule to not watch videos of games I don't own, that way first impressions are properly preserved.
Well, when I finally purchased a repro cart a few years ago I was blown away. The speed and intensity is unparalleled by anything else on the system as far as I've experienced. And the music is just fuckin' jammin!
Re: Recca on 3DS eShop
Well, I know I'm the minority.
It isn't a bad game, it's just not all that jazz people like to talk about.
Its reputation is blown out of proportions due to its rarity and the OMG fact that a certain guy Yagawa designed it.
Sure, it's fast, it's got tons of bosses, but the flicker is borderline unbearable and the asymmetrical stages give it an awkward pace.
Zanac wipes the floor with Recca any time of the day.

To be fair, I've only played it under emulation conditions [read: sprite limit off], and I bet so have a lot of other people here.Kollision wrote:Well, I know I'm the minority.![]()

Even still, it took a while before I actually enjoyed playing Recca, rather than simply being impressed at the game's pace.
It's a rather good game, but it's not the pinnacle of [Famicom] shooting people make it out to be.

Re: Recca on 3DS eShop
Personally, I just want this to come here, even if it isn't likely. Greylancer is on the US Wii VC, so there is some hope. I'm curious if Yagawa was involved with Burai Fighter or Isolated/Max Warrior since he used to work for Kid, who appear to be the developers of those games and Recca, according to gdri.smspower.org. I know for sure Yagawa was involved with Kickmaster.

Downloaded it today.
Confirmed:
Confirmed:
- Flicker remains
- No scoreboards (not expected, but checked anyways)
- Normal Game, Score Attack and Time Attack (probably just like Famicom version)
- Ship speed seems crazy fast but this is also probably the same as the original game. Had more luck using the d-pad than analog pad.
