Looks great! Funny cat bomb.

Please please please add the possibility to rotate the image for the Dreamcast version. Surely that wouldn't require more than a couple of lines of code? I understand that it may be psychologically/emotionally challenging to make "the cheap port" better than "the original", especially if the devs are huge Neo fans (I still remember how DC Fast Striker had that image taunting players about long loading times, instead of a proper loader that starts loading the next level in good time). But it would surely be of huge benefit to many people. Or at least I have the DC connected to a TV (with complicated cable routing going through and behind cabinets so it's not easy to move), not some easily rotatable 15khz monitor that many Neo systems might be connected to. But it's a big-ish TV so even with side borders I get a good sized area for the game, especially if I pull up a chair...

thinking of it. While (as previously stated) the NG version would need a complete alternative set of graphics, the DC should indeed be able to handle a "rotation" step. Maybe just with 1:1 mapping of the original 240x320 onto the 480p line output and with optional fullscreen scaling in addition.

Nice idea!

I can't say I am excited. :(
Looks (below) standard and uninspired.
Seems like the only reason to make this is that it'd be the NGeo's first tate game.

But guess I 'm alone on this. :?

Don't shit on it yet - You're pretty much being shown an alpha of the game, and Timm has just demonstrated that he is listening to his base regarding what we like / don't like. If there's something specific that you don't care for, say something!
After playing and loving Fast Striker, I have no doubt that this game will be awesome as well.

let's turn it around.
What's here that people are so excited about?

sure it has a nice bomb and it's on NGeo and DC.
But it seems 'stock' looking graphics/theme, no new gameplay, no gimmicks to make it stand out.

I won't say it's bad yet, as indeed it's still in development, but I can't say it looks to be any better than any other mediocre homebrew or flash game.
And for the record I think Fast Striker looks great and is 1 I'll have to get in the end.

Well, not much is known about the game, however, I'm really digging the visuals. Looks a lot better than what NGDEV has previously put out (seriously, what is with the garish colours and weird shading?).

Also, the fact that this is a legit vert shmup. Verts > vertizontals every time.

You're seriously wondering why people are excited about an upcoming shmup... on a shmup forum?

Well that's your opinion but I bet a lot of people will see the "stock" graphics as proper STG graphics! Even more importantly, no silly gameplay gimmicks! Unless there are some, hard to say based on the short teasers.

Well, no one can say the Hellwigs' games are objectively very good. There's always been cross-pollination among shooters, but where someone like Yagawa would take a game he liked and make it his own, NG:DEV.TEAM would just produce a somewhat inferior imitation. Where they're successful is in capitalizing on the attachment Neo-Geo (and to a lesser extent, Dreamcast) owners have to those consoles. If the exact same titles had been released for XBLA, many of the same people buying would instead laugh them off.

Just a thought... Is it possible to make unlicensed, region-locked game exclusively for Japanese 360?

lol, first time I am having criticism (negative observation) on a new NG:DEV game coming to DC and people jumping on me right away!

Having watched both teasers several times now I still stand by my observation.
It just doesn't tingle me in any way.
To be fair the teasers are really short and film quality isn 't that well, oh and I think the music is ok.

that's a rhetorical question I hope. Not every shmup = excitement per se.
(I have seen great shmups being met with more criticism than this so far... *cough*.. Chaos Field *cough*)

Not my words, just a childhood favourite.
And from what we had in those days this wasn't half bad at all.

How can anyone not be excited by these movies? I'm just sitting here smiling when watching them.
Best of all; there are no god darn counter numbers filling the screen. You can actually see the beautiful pixel art!

Except trap will have to make a rank counter patch (assuming this is that kind of game).

You were criticising us. Not making negative observations on a game. Perhaps because THE GAME IS NOT EVEN FINISHED YET.

Yeah, I mean Yagawa is one of the best shmup designers alive, but not every game that has rank is a cheap copy of his games. Another solid NeoGeo shooter is fine w/ me.

Awesome! I picked up Pink Bullets and Fast Striker but skipped Gunlord.

I'll be picking this up for DC for sure.

Those pink bullets are driving me nuts. Definitely more Cave than Toaplan in that respect, but eh, the rest might be a nice homage. Some Toaplan + NMK-like ship in the middle. I also have to admit I find that section of background rather underwhelming, but I was under the impression that backgrounds change over pretty quickly.

I've been keeping an eye on this game and it looks like a pastiche of Toaplan and Cave graphics/gameplay.

Here's what I think is representative right now based on the videos/pictures we've seen.

Sprites and background Graphics: Toaplan early 90s style
Enemy bullet patterns: Cave style
Player's weapons: Toaplan style, less ridiculous waves of bullets, Truxton style megabomb (there is another "90 degree homing bullets" weapon I've seen in Gryzor's pc demo of neo xyx that I haven't seen in the ng dev team teasers yet, but this weapon is peculiar to, and lifted straight out of Doggyun)
Hitbox: Cave style (small hitbox)

There look to be other little Cave tribute elements in the game. For example, in the first teaser video, a large plane is towing the player's ship, just as is done in the first levels of Dodonpachi, Daioujou, and Ketsui.

I think the game might wind up to be a mix of gameplay elements from between the companies' titles. I don't think it will be as extreme or full of bullets as Cave games like the Dodonpachi series, but I think it will be considerably more fast paced and feel a little more modern than the early 90s Toaplan games, despite the older graphic style. I look forward to trying it out :)

I think he's forgotten quite a few of Rozyrg's games had pink bullets (Flying V didn't, that trippy-as-fuck game had every colour) too, so it's not exactly a 'surprise' or anything. As for taste, looks fine to me. I'm more worried about whether he'll have some huge-breasted chick at the end of the game like he tends to do. :P
