SPI board / hardware display differences?
I don't have anything concrete (what a surprise) at this time, but after finally getting the last of the Raiden Fighters series, I noticed that its display (larger SPI board, US region) seemed somewhat clearer than a small SPI board RFJ. The positioning of the video - via XRGB-2 and CRT VGA monitor - seemed a bit different, too, with some line at the top. I'll try to update this soon.

Could have told you that years ago - the original motherboards have better video and sound output.

And here I thought the smaller motherboards might be an interesting alternative
What you say about the sound was also apparent in my little comparison, too, I think.
I'd like to avoid motherboard swapping. Maybe I'll go look for a replacement SPI motherboard for Jet.

Yup - the picture seems softer on the newer type and not as vibrant.

I'll try to put together a comparison video sometime soon. I don't need to get into a SPI motherboard collecting habit though...

I've got both a JPN & USA region SPI mobo so it's cool not having to worry if said SPI cart is the correct region or not if booting it up. A USA region SPI cart of Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. can be had for a mere $50 or so these days.
