It's worth taking the time for these ones. Pony in the Box also does a Daring Doo Adventures series that I need to check out.

Just listened to the first two Doctor Whooves adventures. Really good stuff, though the Twilight and Spike voices took a while to adjust to, not that they were bad though, just different.

Yeah I had the same problem. Doctor Whooves and Assistant is a little rough for the first three episodes by the way. Around episode 4 is when it starts to really get good. Completely different kind of doctor, but Derpy is voiced by Bald Bumbo Rat, who frankly IS Derpy, so that's a big point in it's favour.

Now I'm interested. I met one of the Pony In A Box staff members at Midwestria, and their panel was surely helpful when it came to writing.

I'm starting to realize that I like the fanfics better than the show itself. I mean, they push some weird angles that can be incredibly fun. Some examples:

Smiling Flowers - Cheerilee has been telling a lie for many years, and now she can't do it anymore: it is time to tell the truth and deal with the taboos that surround cutie marks. Really sweet, including a very sympathetic portrayal of the usually detestable Diamond Tiara.

Trixie's Gettin' Back On Her Hooves - a career utterly destroyed, the gifted stage magician finds herself reduced to abject poverty; and while her one-time rival tries to help, there are those who want to keep her down. Starts a bit slow, but the final chapters are absolutely epic.

Visionary - the old queen dethroned, the changelings get themselves a new leader, a young king eager to find peace with the pony nation; not only he will have to face the mistrust of their former enemies, but also a traitor in their own midst.

Eternal - just as Celestia attempts to rekindle the strained friendship with her former student, a grave sin from a distant past finally catches up to her and threatens to separate them forever; Twilight is forced to explore Celestia's very mind to find what it means to love an immortal, and how this sentiment may be her mentor's only hope for redemption. Warning, seriously feels-inducing. And I mean it's truly heart-rending.

Now a little break to say: 'Eternal' is technically the best fanfic I ever read. Epic, gripping, amazingly well-written. But the damn thing is so sad that it hurts, there's no way I can call it my favorite. Instead, I shall choose this:

Mirror's Image - after a very difficult birth, little Twilight's survival seemed to be nothing short of a miracle. Or was it? Eighteen years later, the changeling queen comes to take her daughter back home... oh, you know what it means. And it's awesome. This story explores the origins of the changeling race, Chrysalis' motivations, and a tragic connection to the darker days of the equestrian princesses. Things get quite dramatic at some points, but it's still pretty light-hearted and sweet.

I have a really hard time with fanfics in general. Mostly due to the stigma and the sheer amount of crap that is out there. However, if they have a good writer, like Corey W. Williams of The Vinyl Scratch Tapes, they can be fun. Though i still prefer the radioplay over the written version. Honestly the only fic I've really read was Bubbles, which was also surprisingly well written, if not terribly depressing.

BTW nice to see some positive faces in here who aren't myself, Drunkninja24 or Specineff for a change.

Even as a fan of the show that stuff is ridiculous. Friggin' applying trashy 14 year old storylines to characters who can't possibly have any relation to them. Shit like this is why I can barely bring myself to enjoy the show at all.

Are you hating on all fan fiction, or just what Stormwatch chose to post? Because while I won't defend individual stories, I will defend the overall concept of fanfiction as it is really nothing more than adaptation. What's the difference between The Dark Knight (Film), Batman: Year One (Comic), Batman (1960s TV), Batman: Arkham City (Video Game) and a Batman fanfic posted on the internet? The quality of the product, not much else. They are all adaptions of Bob Kane and Bill Finger's original creation that take that character in different directions. Some are a strict interpretation, others branch off and explore different kinds of Batman, but none are inherently bad. Now tastes may vary on what is acceptable and what is not, but adaptation itself is not a problem. Both Arthur Conan Doyle and H. P. Lovecraft have had their properties continued after their death, by professional authors who were fans of their work and the results are generally well received.

The big problem with "Fan Fiction" is that too often the term is used to refer to slash fics written by talentless 14-year olds who probably spent more time with their dick in their hand, then their hands on the keys (See: 50 Shades of Gray). And yeah, that shit is pretty fucking horrible, but it shouldn't taint the works of genuinely talented people who do understand the characters and how to write them. And they don't even have to get the characters right, so long as the fit properly within the story (i.e. satire, parody, etc.).

While I can give no examples of written fan fiction within the Pony world specifically (because I don't read it), there's lots of GOOD adaptations in other forms. The Vinyl Scratch Tapes, the two Doctor Whooves productions, Rainbow Dash Presents, Friendship is Witchcraft, hell even the bizarro PONY.MOV series. There's also been a surprisingly good amount of fan comic creations on Tumblr such as Ask-CutieMarkCrusaders, Ask-MafiaOctavia, Ask-PrincessMolestia (which is just surreal).
