I grew up there and the downtown area still fucking baffles me. Then again, when I was there, 70 was 2 lanes the WHOLE fucking way, and it wasn't done w/ construction before I cruised. The drivers are still better than the other major cities I've lived in since leaving Texas though.

Probably b/c you've never been there and apparently ignore all facts about it. :D

Actually, Austin is an amazing blip in the sane realm. It is probably the most liberal city I can think of in the states (even more so than San Francisco, even though I've only been a few times) and it's right in the middle of the bible belt. I never realized how nutty the inhabitants were until I left. Eeyore's Birthday is quite a unique event, where the police are (or at least were) like, "Fuck it... keep it in the park and you can do whatever you want..."

I think my buddy Brian had the best comment on living in Austin, in that it's great because no one in Austin is actually from Texas.

Not sure I understand the Texas bashing.

I do understand that some people (like myself) have always wanted to move away from the area they grew up in. Some will trash where they were raised because it is where they no longer desire to live.

Certain regions of Texas do suck, but what state doesn't have an armpit?

I like it out here in the metroplex, although I don't find myself in Dallas proper very often (except for events).

I'm from the suburbs, which I'm sure is a huge difference from living closer to the city. Most of it in my experiences in growing up where stereotypes are extremely pronounced, and I followed almost none of them, except playing (American, of course) football. Then when you go to Austin and find that literally, nobody gives a shit about your hangups or even if you have any, it makes you question what the fuck everyone else's problem is. That was the case with me, anyway.

Also, the DFW area as well as Houston are:
-Too fucking big
-Are useless without cars
-Don't have Thundercloud Subs (seriously, WTF people?)

That being said, it was my home. My family and friends are there, and I go back semi-regularly. My sister moved back there with her family, so I assume even when my parents pass away I will go back and visit from time to time. They are in Fort Worth though and a few childhood friend still in Dallas, so that will be a tough one.

Me neither, but it's only after being away for so long that I feel that I can appreciate it now. It really is a great place. I love Austin as well, but summer is fucking brutal. The only time I've ever felt heat like that was in Mexico. That, and it's got traffic jams on the magnitude of LA now. Dallas has pockets of liberalism.. just check out the Cedar Springs area or Oak Cliff. 8) Oak Cliff is exploding with new businesses and renovation. As for Ft. Worth, I went down to Magnolia near the hospital district, and that place is booming! There's a vegetarian restaurant, a bicycle shop, an Egyptian restaurant, a few gay clubs, etc.. I didn't even recognize the place from the last time I was there. This is Cow Town!!

The gay clubs have always been there though, and are in every large city, no matter how conservative. I'm sure Salt Lake City has more than it's fair share. I guess when I see "pockets of liberalism" that means the rest of it is too conservative for it's own good.

The heat in Austin sucks yes, but it's way better than Houston, and not that much worse than Dallas. Honestly, summer in Texas (save near the coast) is a fucking joke compared to Summer in Tokyo. Humidity is far more misery inducing than heat. That and the fact that you have to drive everywhere in the big cities (a minus for me) means you just need to stomach it for a few minutes every time you go from A to B.

Agreed. The humidity is what makes summers so oppressive.

It was hot here this summer (110F), but not as hot as summer in Alabama (rarely hit 100F). I'll take 110 at 35% over 95 at 70%.

Yeah, it's brutal here. I dehydrated twice this past summer. Once on top of Fuji (uggh) and once in my fucking apartment, working... in the morning. :|

I went to Burning Man, which everyone knows is in the desert. Other than the shit that comes with ultra dryness, like huge cracks all over your hands that all the dust gets into (not to mention are open wounds), making it where you have make love like you have a pair of hooks instead of hands, it was super easy to deal with. Wear sun block, drink some water = no probs.

the best traffic tactic is to speed up just a hundred feet or so from the light to rocket around somebody with their right turn signal on, only to sit at the light. Some driver with a Florida tag. (Most states allow right turns on red, and Florida is also one of these states.)

Did a family photo shoot in the botanical gardens when I was there last. I found the Dallas Arboreteum to be way gooder.

Haha. Well, it sucks in the winter, I'm sure. This was Thanksgiving time. The Arboretum was still going pretty strong. My buddy had a season pass and told me, "You missed it last week. There was a hawk eating a grackle up on a limb in front of families and kids and everything..." Haha.

This. If you want to play Ridge Racer, go put the disc in your Playstation. Don't endanger people like this.

I can't say it isn't an impressive watch though, but the risk involved is fucking insane, and there's no valid reason to do this on public streets. Even if you're the best driver around.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

damn. If I had an S38B38 under the hood I would probably raise a little hell from time to time but certainly not in the middle of traffic. Making a video of this behavior is also pretty dumb. I see there is now a comment asking for donations to pay traffic fines
