Best Genesis shooter?

Post by RiderAce »

I'd go with Twinkle Tale myself.

As far as shmups.com goes, I think Twinkle Tale's more of a borderliner.

Thunder Force 3 will probably always get my vote for top Genny/MD shooter.
You're arguing for a universe with fewer waffles in it. I'm prepared to call that cowardice.

Nah, Bio Hazard Battle's a fun game. ;) As far as choosing a "Best", or "Favorite" shooter on Genesis...I can't. I can never choose a favorite. Different games hit the spot better than others at different times for me. Ah well.

Thunderforce III. I'd played shooters before, but it's the game that really made me a shmup fan. To this day I find it pretty impressive, though yeah, it's too easy.

One of my favorite shmups on the Genesis is actually one nobody really talks about, Insector X. Yeah, the cute em up graphics got scrapped for a more mature style, probably so it would sell outside of Japan, but the gameplay is still there. I think of it as what the first few Darius games should have been like. It plays similar to the Darius series (made by Taito after all), but it has more action, bullets, and enemies flying at you. It is rather easy though.

Lately I've been feeling the simplicity and warm feelings of TF3. Indeed one of the least threatening shooters.

Arrowflash or Bust, Mediocrity or not, the music in that game kicks.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Gynoug all the way. SNES-style graphical frippery, superb Castlevania-style tunage, huge guns, bullet spam, and the finest piece of intro music the MD ever played host to. Top notch.

Gairies has got some serious kickass music though! It's no joke, probably like one of the best soundtracks on the MD, as far as the shmups are concerned.

Too bad the game itself is so damn difficult.

Gaiares'... distinctive music... is backed by what I can only refer to as splat-drums. It's something!

the only horis i've ever got down with, probably because they have an ace graphical style as well as gameplay, but it's a toss up between bio-hazard battle and gynoug. so many willys...

i can't believe that phallic symbolism could pervade a computergame to such a large extent

Gynoug is great.
so's Grindstormer (its just so freaking hard, i love it :D)
also, i really like Curse for some reason (but seing as you're looking for "the best", i won't elaborate on my defense). i especially like that it cost me a fiver.
and the obvious Eliminate Down, Gleylancer, MUSHA, and toaplan ports.
I have no sig whatsoever.

I get the impression that topics like this always end mentioning THE ENTIRE shmup lineup of the given system.

What genesis shmup has yet to be mentioned in this thread?

Here are, accordingly to xenocide files, all the shmups/borderliners not mentioned here yet. This discrimination had to end! ^_^

Action 52

Atomic Robo-Kid

Battle Squadron

Bio Ship Paladin [also Gunship Gomora]

Cross Fire [also Super Airwolf]

Darwin 4081

Divine Sealing

Fire Mustang

Forgotten Worlds

Gadget Twins

Granada X

Heavy Unit

Hellfire

Magic Girl

Master of Weapons

Mega SWIV

Raiden Trad

Slap Fight

Smash TV

Sol-Deace

Sub Terrania

Super Fantasy Zone

Super Space Invaders

Task Force Harrier EX

Twin Cobra

Viewpoint

Whip Rush

XDR X-Dazedly-Ray

Xenon 2

Zero Wing

Of all these, I'd cast my vote on Super Fantasy Zone. Among the others, TF III wins.
