Disney buys Lucasfilms... WTF

Post by Strider77 »

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Worth it just for ILM and Skywalker Sound. I think the Lucasfilm side may have been less important.

Maybe they can save Star Wars from George?

Maybe we will get the original movies unaltered on blu-ray now.

To be honest, I'm not particularly surprised to hear this (after all, Disney and Lucas have been working together for years, and Star Wars and Indiana Jones are both prominently featured in the Disney theme parks, so if anyone was going to buy out Lucasfilm it would most likely be Disney) but the pricetag is perhaps the most surprising part of the deal. I've got to imagine that the ILM side of things is worth a lot more than people would think...

They'll be made ... and go straight into the Disney Vault for the next 100 years.

Wow, new feature film in 2015. Considering the questionable note Star Wars ended on and the solid quality of The Avengers post-Disney acquisition, that might not be such a bad thing.

I'm not much of a Star Wars fan nowadays but I fondly remember reading all the expanded universe novels back in the 90s from Heir to the Empire until the inrush of uninteresting Young Jedi Knights books. I'm curious whether they'll create a new story for the upcoming film or whether they'll adapt one of the best parts of the expanded universe. I'm hoping for a new story myself; thinking back on the weeks and months leading up to The Phantom Menace, nothing beats the excitement of a new story.

This is great news. It's about time Georgie got pushed out.
Now if Disney wants to solidify the SW fan-base, they'd retcon the prequels. :D

Awesome news, if the result is that we'll never have to endure another Star Wars film written & directed by George Lucas.

Because somebody strapped you into a chair and forced you to watch the previous ones?

What's going to happen is the same that's happened with Marvel since the Disney buy-out. Now you'll end up with a new Star Wars film every single year, plus a million questionable spin-offs, plus a sudden and continuous tsunami of merchandise.

Maybe the new film will be Joe Johnston's Boba Fett project. He's mentioned wanting to do it a few times, could happen.

Can't be a bad thing, Lucasfilm and ILM aren't what they used to be.

I thought the same thing when I heard the news. I didn't even bother going to any of the films past the first prequel and still won't set aside time to watch them.

I did get ahold of the live action Ewoks movies though. There's a kind of convoluted release history with those, so maybe Disney will do a proper release of those, too...

George Lucas will stay as a consultant to Disney.

So I guess this just means three more movies I will have to pretend never got produced

Yeah, this could actually be a good thing. It's easy to ridicule Lucas, but jesus christ, it's been 32 years (or so) since A New Hope came out. We all change, and one guy running the show for so long can't possibly be good. Thinking of a band I went and saw recently that had their heyday back in the early 70's. I mean, you can't possible be the same band. Only a few brain cells remain from when you were living in the 70's, and so many new ideas have shifted your mental paradigm a dozen times over. You can't be the same people. I know I'm not the same person. Time to forget the past or reinvent it, and if SW needed to be yanked away from Lucas, then more power to Disney, because there's still potential in that world the same way Doctor Who was reinvented by the BBC. And yes, HD reissues of the original trilogy.

I wouldn't trust Disney to "save" any significant work of art.

Who would you trust? I know I'm not the only one (nor alone) but they are the only one to pull off a reboot/resurrection from days of old, with Tron Legacy. Maybe not what everyone wanted, but it is leaps and bounds better than the prequels, and what I remember of Prometheus.

Disney Animation may be exploitative when it comes to Direct-to-dvd sequels, but the fact of the matter is that the company is very big on archiving, restoration and preservation. They are far more likely to release the original versions of the film in a high quality format than George Lucas ever would. When it comes to new films, you need to remember that Disney is also the parent company of a lot of production houses that produce great films. Pulp Fiction was the first film greenlit by Miramax after being purchased by Disney. So I trust Disney to do a better job then George has.
