Radiant Silvergun, Saturn rev Vs. XBLA modes, need advice
I bought the XBLA version as a gift for a friend recently and we decided to have a score competition (we've been competing for scores in Raiden for months and decided to try competing on something a little more epic and complex so I suggested this as a change of pace). I'm using my Saturn copy and playing in Saturn mode. What mode should he be playing to keep it balanced between us? Am I correct that if I'm playing Saturn mode that he should be starting a new story mode file on the XBLA version every time he plays? Or does Arcade mode on the XBLA rev have all the stages and same scoring? Guess I could use a breakdown on the modes and differences, really.

Score Attack Story Mode
Even starting a new file in Normal Play everytime would still have different lives count.

360 version has no slowdown at all, and there is noticeable input delay. Those are the two major differences.

Is there input delay? I didn't notice that.

I played both versions back to back, and the difference is pretty significant.

So the 360 version has input lag? Any other differences?Zerst wrote:I played both versions back to back, and the difference is pretty significant.

I would like to hear more on this. I'm curious if it's caused by the game or the TV.Zerst wrote:I played both versions back to back, and the difference is pretty significant.

I feel I can vouch for the lag/buffer.BrianC wrote:I would like to hear more on this. I'm curious if it's caused by the game or the TV.Zerst wrote:I played both versions back to back, and the difference is pretty significant.
I'm disliking this port more as I play it. No 4:3 support is just the tip of the iceberg.

ben shinobi doesn't seem to be having any trouble with the port, so it can't be too bad. then again, he is a robot.

I just sat down a bit with my Saturn version, and quickly ran into my other room to play the XBLA version.
There definitely is a bit of a delay. It's not massive or anything, but it's noticeable.
But it's got Ikaruga mode!

I was wondering if this level of input lag is typical. I've been playing this game for a year on my big honkin' lcd and getting nowhere with it. I finally plugged it into my computer monitor and beat i within a day or two. Between the in game lag and the lcd lag, it was just impossible. Compare it to Deathsmiles or something and you can really tell a difference. It's a shame. Input lag is very important to keep under wraps with this genre especially.

I wouldn't say it is typical, no. I can't think of any other 360 shmup that I have, that has the same amount of input delay.
Anyone want to chime in and point one out?

Its unfortunate, this amount of lag. I've never been able to get a hold of the Saturn version. Is there an emulator out there which can run this lag free? I tried ssf a few years ago, but there seemed to be a good bit of input lag there as well. Is it possible that radiant silver gun is just a laggy game by default? Could it be default for the game itself to have a few frames extra? I don't have the Saturn version to compare it to.

I've been playing the xbox 360 port for a while, and I dont have the saturn version to compare to either.
I dont really notice much lag. Then again, I dont notice much lag with any game..

I don't believe there's an unlaggy saturn emulator; no doubt input is sequenced oddly in those implementations - bit of a shame because it's probably an oversight, and probably an easier thing to resolve than all the other trickery that went into those emulation efforts... last game I tried them out on was fire pro wrestling [got the game in the mail and I was too lazy to setup saturn] - really hurts the play-ability of that... after an hour I ended up hooking up the saturntwotone8 wrote: Is it possible that radiant silver gun is just a laggy game by default? ... Anyway back on topic, native saturn + stv are perfectly responsive. The xbla version [true port?... half emulated? ... who knows?] seems to be better than emulation, but not as good as original/native version.
However, I would suggest xbla is perfectly serviceable as long as you play on a responsive display. Of course it'd be ideal if it could be tightened up, but for accessibility and price it's fine, I feel it's 'adjustable' to play, without being misleading/wrecking the game, and has a decent set of options.
*edit After having said all of this I've realised I've not actually gone back to the stv version in mame for ages...?... it won't have the saturn mode ofc...
Re: Radiant Silvergun, Saturn rev Vs. XBLA modes, need advic
It's been quite a while since this was released on XBLA, so I don't suppose we'll ever see a patch that will enable it to be run full screen on a regular CRT..? This alone makes the Saturn version the only (home) version worth playing for me... such a shame.

I keep marvelling at the Saturn version's visuals with RGB colour on a CRT. How on Earth did they make those backgrounds looks so... spatial? I'm in dearth of words. "3D" from that period (2.5D in this case) sometimes does it for me (Silent Hill is another example).

Re: Radiant Silvergun, Saturn rev Vs. XBLA modes, need advic
SSF has quite a bit of lag. I was playing Sonic R on it, extremely hard with how much lag it has. Which is a shame, because it's also the fastest and most accurate Saturn emulator. I should probably get my Saturn chipped one of these days...twotone8 wrote:Its unfortunate, this amount of lag. I've never been able to get a hold of the Saturn version. Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Radiant Silvergun 360 version have input lag, not as much as the ssf saturn emulator, but is still important.brokenhalo wrote:ben shinobi doesn't seem to be having any trouble with the port, so it can't be too bad. then again, he is a robot.
It's a shame that Treasure doesn't make a patch to fix it.
When I've payed the 360 version during many months, I forgot this lag (as on mame). That's why I've made decent score, but STV / Saturn still the best version so far !!!
Re: Radiant Silvergun, Saturn rev Vs. XBLA modes, need advic
I could have sworn I was just reading the other day about Radiant Silvergun for Saturn actually having less slowdown when being emulated, although that is different than input lag. When I got an actual Saturn I noticed pretty quickly that it ran much faster than when I emulated it on SSF(with a fairly crummy PC of course) but whoever said that may have been using Yabuse or just didn't know what they were talking about.
It's a shame they never fixed the screen modes or input lag on the 360 port through patches though.
