The guy who made Wing Commander has a new game out called Star Citizen.
It's going to be part online, part single player and the single player segment is called "Squadron 42"...and well, look at the trailer:

There's a ton of callouts to Wing Commander despite the game not having the IP and it's also going to have Privateer and Freelancer elements (mostly in multiplayer though). Crowdfunding is going to be used to make the game's budget and it's already hit around $400,000 after 2 days despite the main website being overloaded by so many people visiting it.
I'm excited for this. While I know sometimes Roberts talks big, and Freelancer wasn't all it was cracked up to be, this has the potential to be good. Plus, it's basically a new Wing Commander and a new Freelancer/Privateer all in one.

Re: Chris Roberts' new game
I got properly excited when I thought it was a gameplay option to go freelance or join up with the military proper. MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries hinted at it, but the "join a merc unit" mode was basically "don't choose your mission or shit". I would love a Wing Commander/X-Wing/TIE Fighter style game to give you that option - join up and rise through the ranks or go mercenary but still be a part of the same core plot.
Any space combat affair is cause for celebrations these days though. Although in the trailer I noticed strong design elements from both Wing Commander and StarLancer, it looks pretty promising. But then, it's a couple of years away yet...

I can't help it, I'm 100% excited - Wing Commander III was the first game I ever got for my Pentium 90 and I loved it, and I went and got every single WC related game I could get my hands on, including Strike Commander. While I didnt like Freelancer as much, I still thought it was a great game in it's own right and I lost pretty much a year of my life playing it on one server. I never fully 'accepted' the mouse control, but I did get used to it. I am overjoyed to see Chris showing his Saitek X-52 towards the end and also the inner cockpit views, as that was always the view and control method I preferred, by a long way.
Though I don't like to tempt fate, I really really do want to play this game if it's even half as cool as the little bits of footage make it look, I'll be very happy.

A new game like this is long overdue. I think the two last space operas I played were Freelancer and before that Privateer 2. Nowadays there is only the X-Series. Those games are great but I really wanted to play a game like Wing Commander again. Might even get a new PC just for this and X Rebirth.

Now imagine this game with the at-gamerelease-hopefully-available consumer version of the oculus rift vr headset and a forcefeedback joystick, played in the cockpit view...
