New MSX homebrew vertical-shmup discovery: Mecha 8.

Post by Adigun A. Polack »

Hello to you phenomenally awesome people of this Shmups community once again, and this time, I have a brand-new 2012 MSX homebrew shmup by Óscar Toledo Gutiérrez to show you which officially placed 5th in the MSXdev’11 competition when the results were in... and it is entitled Mecha 8 (メカ八), a tough yet wonderfully well-polished vertically-scrolling shooting game in the style of what Compile’s Aleste would have been like *had* it been on the original early MSX computer system instead of on the MSX2 to begin with... imagine that!! ;)

You may see my original brand-new 2012 superplay for this entire game right here on YouTube that I had uploaded just now to show you more clearly what it is all about, and the game itself is available for download and play on all MSX home computers and its emulators (like blueMSX and openMSX), through this simple link:
...and if you can scroll down a bit among the list of entries that were successfully entered into the MSXdev’11 compo, you will find the game itself... in which the download for it (as well as the game’s documentation and sticker) is just a single click away from there!!

You play the role in this game of a gorgeous, yellow-haired, no-nonsense ass-kicking lady named Tricia Thunder (24 years old) as she heads into the serious fray of battle as pilot of her newly suited machine called “Mecha Eight”, working her way through all five (5) levels of such challengingly intense play. And here to assist her along the way are the red-haired MRL director/top scientist named Scarlett Summer, and a blue-haired young woman on the team named Noriko Toroyama (who likes to show off and even break things sometimes!). As the game goes along as you clear the stages, brief cutscenes represent the story’s forwarding progress through text-based dialogue... and even some occasional bits of unintentionally-hilarious Engrish along the way — for example, right at the very first opening cutscene just before the game begins, one of the characters utters out the phrase “Send she immediately” (what!?)... well, just watch, as there is some unintentional comedy gold around here... and strangely enough to be honest, I was laughing so hard!!! !!

As for the game itself, once you get used to how it plays, it can be a lot of fun for a regular MSX title, even with its early primitive sound that it has. It works well in its own right, and is worth a pick-up-and-play; Aleste fans should feel right at home with this interesting little homebrew entry by Óscar Toledo Gutiérrez, and on that basis, Mecha 8 comes recommended from me. Not a half-bad shooting game overall if I do say so myself!!! !

Just thought I’d share this awesome little discovery with you. :D

The name "Compile" scratched the itch (and MSX vertical scrollers tend to be more stomachable than MSX horizontal scrollers to me for a technical reason).
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

Mechanism Eight is the name of a very famous Unreal Tournament track. Probably not the inspiration of this title, though...I'll check this one out soon!

Just watched the vid...Man this game looks great! Visually the general motif reminds me of MUSHA yet the actual game pace and boss behavior reminds me more of The Guardian Legend.Ethier way, it feels like a large homage to Compile, only without the 'just a giant group of turrets' bosses.

Speaking of the bosses, they were pretty impressive for a MSX 1 game- how many bytes you think this thing takes up?...One feature I thought was really cool, was even though there was a health bar for them: the bosses had a visual cue in the form of "popcorn" explosions sprouting all over their sprite when they were close to biting it! A small detail that's still a pretty nifty touch.

Just watching this game inspires me.

Only one minor flaw- a VERY small ost...there's the main level theme, the boss theme, the title theme, and the plot theme, and that's about it....unless there's a gameover theme that I'm not aware of...

Definately going on my "To Play" list.. 8)

Edit: Opps...forgot about the stage clear theme.

I'll admit I like these story scenes the most.

Finally got around to playing it, made it as far as Stage 4 and then after many tries...proptly gave up...Fourth boss is a missle spamming bastard. Hell, Stage 4 in general is just plain brutal....too many enemies at once, combined with frequet power downs from getting shot(Damn my mecha's faboulous shoulder pads!!)and you have a recipe for gameover.

Which leads to my two big beefs with Mecha 8:

1) Getting powered down by enemy fire happens waaaaaay too easily, and being stuck with Speed1 and Power1 leaves you ripe for a pounding whenever you reach a boss.On top of that, it's kinda tricky to actually hit anything enough times with Power1 shots before they leave the screen or run into you...usually it's the latter.

2) The Gauge fills a bit too slow, making it really only effective at bosses where you can really build it up and then fire it off.

Other than that, it's still a fun game, just wish powering down didn't happen so frequently...
