Fantasy Zone II DX -- Sega should do more remakes like this

I was so surprised that Sega did this a few years ago.

It makes me wish they'd do more remakes in the same vein. That is, more 8-bit shmups remade on the System-16 platform.

I believe this version was released on the Fantasy Zone Collection for PS2 under the Sega Ages banner.

Indeed, it was, in 2008 I believe.

I've been playing both this and Super Fantasy Zone the last few nights--Cannot decide which game I like better. Both are outstanding.

As impressive as Super is, I thought the homing missiles broke the difficulty a bit.

I'm kind of partial to the SMS version of Fantasy Zone II for some reason.

M2 actually developed this, and they're one of the only teams that seems to understand you shouldn't remake great games, you should remake installments of long-running series that didn't live up to their potential. M2 also remade the Game Boy's first Gradius title and TwinBee Da.

I hope this ends up on XBLA, WiiWare, or PSN.

It wouldn't surprise me to see that happen, given that M2 has been working on the more recent Sega collections.

Another one that needs this treatment is Space Harrier II. A version done for the arcade Space Harrier hardware with real scaling, analog control (with an option to turn off auto-centering), better BGM quality, and slightly increased difficulty would take this one from good to great.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I completely forgot that M2 developed this game, not Sega.

I would like to see Space Harrier 3D get that treatment as well.

I noticed that Fantasy Zone II DX is indeed emulated in MAME.

With that said, I tried the Windows trial version and will now be seeking out a copy of the PS2 collection.

It's got an option for 240p, just like the Gunstar Heroes Treasure Box and Monster World Complete Collection. Great work from M2, totally worth picking up!

Hello,

I don't know really where to post this :

I'm a huge fan of the first Fantasy Zone game, and a long time player with system16 pcbs.

Has anyone hints/links about how to mod a system16a/system16b pcb to play Fantasy Zone II HD ?
I heard about extending the RAM, and I guess one has to know which B-board to use (if based on system16B).
(Drum says : ) Bin Laden, Ghaddafi, Steve Jobs and now Kim Jong Il. It has been a tough year for evil.

You'll be getting one of them, on the Japanese PSN anyways.

Gradius Rebirth! That it's a remake wasn't really publicized... I've probably heard that word more in conjunction with Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth, even though that's much more loosely based on its Game Boy predecessor.

Ohhhh OK, yeah I knew about Castlevania being a remake but not Gradius. I didn't even really notice the similarities honestly, aside from "it's Gradius". Castlevania Rebirth's similarities end at "Christopher Belmont whips lots of giant eyeballs".

So (sorta) back on topic, does the Fantasy Zone Complete Collection have autofire? The lack of autofire is the one thing that really hurts the Sega Ages Fantasy Zone 3D remake for me.

Fantasy zone with autofire is not fantasy zone. Come on, smash buttons to death

There actually is autofire in the 3D remake, at least on the Sega Classics Collection that we got in the US. You can buy it in challenge mode and it'll be added to the options menu.

It's stupid-fast, though. I don't want to mash buttons, but I don't want this kind of Darius Gaiden Extra speed either. Not much point to the laser then, is there?
