Recommended Anime/Manga?

My favorite anime movie is Gauche the Cellist, directed by Isao Takahata and released in 1982. A few years later he and Hayao Miyazaki founded Studio Ghibli I think he's the better director of the two. Only Yesterday is outstandingly amazing too.

Favorite OVA is FLCL. Just flat out visual storytelling brought to extremely high heights with wondrously creative animation.

Series, probably Kuuchuu Buranko/Trapeze. This can also double as part of an answer to your best series in recent years question as it was aired in 2009. It's a fairly engaging and touching take on mental illnesses. I would also put the director's previous show, Mononoke, aired in 2007, as one of the better series of the past few years. His recent show, Tsuritama, was also the best series of it's respective season, which was last season. It's a show about fishing.

I don't really read manga, can't answer that.

watched Episode 9 of Lovely Angels - Drauch I can understand why you love it so much, the art is perfect, the music is great, it's full of humour, but never in a way which cheapens the main storylines, and overall the stories for each episode are interesting. 100% entertainment, and the mechanical design is quite nice too.

Which one really stands out for you in terms of drawing and which one writes compelling stories? You guys already know I love Terasawa's Cobra and Ikegami's Crying Freeman style while I enjoyed Iwaki's Kiseiju Sci-Fi Mystery right down to the perverted stuff by U-Jin (Sakura Tsuushin) and Utatane (Count Down)

I wish I could read a translation of Okazaki Takeshi's Countach. I think this is the third time I've brought this one up, but I like the way he drew a few of those short stories - the way he did one panel of a girl turning around with a sort of wistful smile (the one on the left in the cover). I think I still have that manga compilation.

Last but not least - Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku - things get SERIOUS in this one.

I absolutely recommend this one. One of the series that got me into anime.

Btw, any good OVAs/movies released in the past couple years? Think the last couple years or so. I've kind of been out of the loop; I think the only recent movie I'd seen was Redline. The new Lupin seems intriguing, anything else out there?

Nadesico is all sorts of commendable. I didn't like the character design at first but then it all clicked with me. I get bad vibes from the military feel of Gundam and such, but Nadesico isn't like that at all.
Accidentally I was listening to Poppy Family today, which I had discovered thanks to this AMV.

just finished episode 18 of Harlock my god the last 3 episodes have been pure epic tragedy - first one was the one about the boyfirend who just wanted to interrogate the girl (im being vague there to be unspoilery), and the last 2 were the chief engineers storyline

Heads up that the Kite OVA is out on Blu-ray in the US tomorrow.

Tsutomu Nihei's Knights of Sidonia manga got picked up for US release by Vertical, starting in 2013. Awesome news, they're definitely the best American manga publisher left in business. I hope they can get their Kickstarter projects (i.e. Tezuka's Barbara) finished in a timely manner.

Anyone have an opinion on Battle Angel Alita: Last Order? I've heard it's a big step back from the original series, but at least it's longer.

I've just watched 8 minutes and already the amount of clever references to anime/mecha tropes is amazing (and there's probably just as many I haven't even noticed) - the art is really good too apart from the characters, but I suppose they suit the OTT style...

It's a bit older news, but it's important for American anime watchers and doesn't seem to have been mentioned here yet: Bandai Entertainment, which pulled out of releasing new anime in the US at the beginning of this year, has announced that it will stop distributing existing anime at the end of November. It originally stated that it would continue distributing until no longer necessary. That's apparently months from now.

There's already quite a bit of stuff that's been long unavailable but if you've been waiting to buy any of Bandai's currently available anime, then it'd be a good idea to snatch them up soon before supply contracts.

Or just wait for it to be re-licensed and re-released by another company. I didn't think I'd ever see Shakugan No Shana, so I bought all the outta print stuff - only to find out it was going to be re-licensed for North America at a way cheaper price

man I'm utterly blown away by Nadesico I haven't been this excited since Bubblegum Crisis - it's just perfect - the space scenes and ships kinda remind me of Gunbuster too, which of course I also love, just brilliant, cant believe I've NEVER heard of Nadesico before.

well I think you'd definitely like it because it is utter taking the piss out of the kid pilot thing, though then again it does let it happen, well it doesnt exactly, well you'd have to watch. I think you'd definitely like the art too apart from the characters, but I kinda think their OTT cuteness is on purpose.
