Yeah, but even designwise that looks retarded.
That pad looks more like some shit you'd find on a remote or something.

Design looks... ok, nothing that's difficult to change at least. I'm a little more concerned that for a thing being headed by Yves Behar that just raised $5 million, their renders are really lame (like student work not world renowned designer work). I suspect they aren't nearly as far along in the process as it's being represented as.

Ten bucks says this ends up being vaporware like the Phantom and they have to refund everyone.

Ha ha ha oh wow. The Phantom ... how aptly named.

I actually thought OnLive was related to Infinium in some way, but it turns out they're not.

And hey the OnLive microconsole is also $99, just like OUYA

Unlikely, though possibly for a different reason.

OnLive and cloud gaming in general are a piece of shit.

Play games you don't own on someone else's machine, with massive input lag! It's the future, guys! Oh, we can delete our games at any time. Look in the EULA. Sorry!

OnLive seems like a good idea -- you there on the netbook, go play Assassins Creed... on your netbook, but the aforementioned problems are pretty bad.
The input lag probably won't go away without lots of infrastructure, and the potential to lose games you bought is just outright bad.
I do see such things like that surviving as a Netflix style service -- you only pay per month and can "rent" all the games you want, with no illusion that the games are yours.
Input delay would still be a problem though [the idiots added Super Street Fighter 4 to their available games, and it is as unplayable as you think].

With that many backers involved, it would turn out rather badly for the Ouya team if they just took the money and ran. Considering that Ouya is an American venture, the people behind it can expect to get their pants sued off in a class action suit by their ~45,000 backers in case they don't release anything and don't issue refunds. As such, I wouldn't consider this scenario to be very likely.
If you are indeed worried about losing your money and getting nothing in return, you can still cancel your pledge until August 9, 1:00am EDT.

If you steal six million dollars, you probably would consider fleeing the country.

I like how color is the only thing that differentiates the Ouya controller's buttons. Colorblind people are going to love that.

For colorblind people, it's mostly a question of whether you choose the right colors. Still, not having symbols for the buttons would be a usability fail in general. Among other things, it makes it a pain in the ass to refer to them in monochrome documentation (whether that be single-color printing, text in a 1bpp font rendering engine, etc.) or with in-engine symbols that are affected by lighting.

Yeah, they should simply number them 1-4, or maybe A-D.

The prototype controller for the OnLive set-top box had face buttons labeled L-I-V-E. That's awesome, I wish they had ran with that. It could also be EVIL or VILE!

Better than the Konami-code :D

Good idea, though. They could use O U Y A

UPDATE: They *are* using O U Y A as button labelling already, it's just not on the prototype controller. You can see it in their screenshot: Blue is O, yellow is U, red is Y, green is A.

Oh this I gotta read

eatingpopcorn.gif

Edit: ok I read and watched the video. Here's wot I learned:

1) John Romero is still a pretty hot chick, even with the beard
2) Android is yarrrrrrrtastic, but I guess nobody pirates on iOS? lolwut
3) John Romero is either heavily invested in Apple, or on their payroll

That's pretty much it. Oh, also apparently he is completely out of touch with Android development because they have had an emulator since Day 1, so basically everything else he said is meaningless because he doesn't know what he's talking about.

What I would really like to see out of OUYA (and I think what they're trying to accomplish), is a completely unique console that just happens to be based on Android. Obviously the vast majority of touch-screen games aren't going to work, but I don't think that's what they want. They want developers to make normal games that you can play with a controller, and they want them to develop it to run on their platform.

It's not really any different than any other console, it just happens to be based on an open platform as opposed to completely proprietary hardware/software.

I think the biggest problem it's going to have is trying to deliver the type of experience people have come to expect from a dedicated gaming console.

Romero hit the fucking nail on the head. The Ouya is an Android tablet that plugs into the TV. That's not something consumers or non-mobile/indie developers will have any interest in, and that's all it's ever going to be.

ActiBlizzard/EA/Ubisoft/Sega/Square/Bamco and so on will never release a game for an openly hackable system, unless they can put DRM on it.

You don't "just happen to be based on" Android. You choose it because of the user base and applications already written for it. The OS itself is complete trash, and development for it is a major hassle, so no one in their right mind would pick it without those previous two (which if all the touchscreen games didn't work, wouldn't exist).

So you actually watched the video? I bet John Romero was pretty hard to understand, having Apple's dick in his mouth while talking.

Final Fantasy III in update 7. The NES one. I always wondered why it was missing from the PS1 remakes.

the way I understood it was because the PS1 versions (and GBA versions) were based on the Wonderswan Color versions, and the Wonderswan died before they got around to making III for it.

Well I think the main reason they chose it is because it's free and runs on existing inexpensive hardware, but I don't know if it's because of an existing user base.

And you're right - just because Android works well on phones and tablets doesn't mean it will work well for a gaming console. In fact in the early days, Android was actually horrible for games. I don't just mean that there weren't any good games available, but the OS and the devices were actually really poorly suited for games.

It's come a long way, but I think they should really focus on heavily customizing whatever version of Android they're using so that it works properly as a gaming system and not try to turn it into a swiss army knife. If it can play videos and music and run a couple of emulators, that would be a nice bonus, but I actually don't care if it will play Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja.

OUYA Kickstarter wrote:This morning, we are honored to announce that OUYA is partnering with Square Enix to bring you one of the most beloved franchises in gaming -- Final Fantasy. We will kick this off with Final Fantasy III, which will be a launch title on OUYA. This will be the first time gamers outside of Japan can play FFIII on their televisions through a console.

But that’s not the end of it: We’re promising to deliver Final Fantasy III like you’ve never seen it before – Hironobu Sakaguchi’s third installment in the role playing game franchise will be updated to exploit OUYA’s high-definition resolution in glorious graphic detail.

Wow. I wonder how many of their pseudo-millions of Kickstarter-non-dollars it cost them

But that's pretty huge, FF III never made it to any of the collections IIRC?
