the too short B section (not the sparse transition) just hits the spot for me. very similar spirit to the kind of music i used to write with my band. melodies like this feel very "floral" to me, i cant explain it well... :?

BIL:

this is a video from MAME on Assault

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6buBpXy6 ... re=related

I suggest to skip to 2:00 or something, since the first stage lacks music.

Metal Hawk, which I posted above, is another awesome example of Hosoe's work in the '80s.

I think that M1 music player for MAME allows to listen to both OSTs without too many problems. Later Namco games have a peculiar structure for their OST memory, so one may need to browse hundred of audio files before playing the stage themes. One example is the excellent Rolling Thunder 2's OST.

Ironically, Rolling Thunder 2 is by Sasou Ayako, Hosoe's wife (lol!), who also worked on the Eurobeat-ish Racer stuff. This couple, with other Namco guys, produces a lot of dance-ish compilations for their label (too lazy to google, now). Must be stuff that sell, I guess!

...and by the way, Stage 4 of Rolling Thunder 2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JicF7DfrxLQ
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

Haha, that explains a lot re: Ayako Sasou and Hosoe's names always popping up on the same soundtracks! I always wondered if there were any "power couples" in game music.

Rolling Thunder 2's OST is great. I wish there'd been a port of the arcade version for PS1 (there should've really been a seventh Namco Museum, if not an eighth...) Considering picking up the MD one at some point.

My favourite arrangement from that game has to be the utterly show-stopping, bass-slapping, guitar-screaming, more-cowbelling MOON FIGHT. A shame you don't get to hear the whole thing unless you stop and wait. "Etude for the Killer" got an awesome update too, pure evil.

I got a kick out of this song being added to Dracula X Chronicles' remake version, in place of "Den" on the last stage. Someone out there loves it too!

Really enjoying Yousuke Yasui's new eschatos arrange tracks;

Wish I could download them as alternate BGM for the game but not going to start buying jp MSP just for that.

^My favourite pro-release shooter OST in years. I miss that sound, reminds me of Hudson's dramatic but irrepressibly upbeat and melodic PCE Star Soldier soundtracks.

I'm a big Siter Skain fan, not least for their shooter trilogy's music - Kamui, RefleX and Alltynex Second's OSTs all have a certain driven sorrow to them. Lots of elegiac choral synth propelled by hammering metal. The closest shooter equivalent I can think of is Hyakutaro Tsukumo's Tecno Soft OSTs, but SS's stuff is nowhere near as glossy or upbeat. Can't find an upload of the track itself, but stage 4's BGM "Native Land" from Alltynex Second is currently blowing my mind. Here's a gameplay vid of the song in action but it may spoil a thing or two, like the level's rather astonishing boss intro.

Another fine example from Kamui, which I think has the strongest OST despite being the Alltynex Trilogy's oldest game by far. I've never heard VGM transition from funereal to furious and back so seamlessly. (thanks to fellow SS fan lte7 for both vids)

Me an' my BIG FUCKIN' MOUT. >:[ Namco Museum Vol.4's port of Assault doesn't run at half speed like I misremembered reading, it's just locked at 60hz where the PCB's refresh rate (going by MAME) is 60.6hz. Finally gave it some quality time, yep, soundtrack is ace. So bizarre that there's no music on the first stage, particularly in an AC game. Guess they were relying on the graphical gimmicks to grab the punters by the knackers. Then again, the sound is no slouch either and it must've felt pretty immense booming out from that cab.

Was recently reminded of Promise RMX by "C418," a brilliantly PCE-ish chiptuning of Silent Hill 2's Promise (Reprise) used at the conclusion of fangame Soundless Mountain II. Makes me want a whole album of them, or at least similar takes on "Alone in the Town" and "Fermata in Mistic Air."

Also, dear God, what did I do to deserve this?! Osamu Ohta's Snow Bros music is too good on MD!

I will also reiterate that Majuu Ou has one of the greatest miniboss themes ever. If you don't grin a little every time you hear those drums drop in followed by the rambunctious groove of what sounds like an unused credits theme from season 1 of The Cosby Show, you're probably one of the game's rotting corpses!

GGX Fatal Duel(Same Character Battle them) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5AiZb1ta0Q

It still bugs me to this day that this version was cut for a far more inferior song in future GG titles. Maybe arc will realize this and change it in the future GG game.

Rage Racer's music is pretty rad. "Bay-beh!" "RAWWWWWR!" I kinda miss the mental gabba/hardstyle of the first two games, but there's some great tunes in here. The title track is pretty intense when going for new time attack records.

Game itself is great too. The muted colour palette, screaming engine sound and blistering sense of speed won't age. Love hearing the roar of wind when dangerously close to the wall and a lap-destroying collision.

But still.

This album is blowing my fucking mind. Data East Manly Action Game Music x1000.

Actually, many of the arrangements are kinda fruity. (as you might expect from Karnov music...) But the Kuuga metal tracks are seriously good, and the weirder stuff is still well-done. Interesting listen.

The original Burnout OST is surprisingly "serious" for a game of this kind:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUdq-W-Bl5E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UP8uSt5pJag
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPIr4m4R-h4

Remind me of old European computer games and demoscene tunes. The video game music flavour as extraordinary in this day and age as the Unreal/Deus Ex/Half-Life vibe.

Zuntata Live '90. Now this is the stuff... classic eccentric, hook-infested ZTT synthpoprockopera. I dig the rawer sound and leaner setlist, compared to some of their later live albums. Highlight is possibly the blazing run through Darius II's "Say Papa" but there's not a bad performance in here. Great crowd too!

I see you that and raise you the

8bit version of A-ha "The Sun Always Shines on TV"

the grad1u5 channel is always good for some under-the-radar gems.

Like the bitchin' dance-rave party that is METAL MASTERS on the gameboy. Too bad the game is nowhere near as cool as the music.

Yes it does! Fuck, I need to look up whether that got a soundtrack release, again.

Guess who worked on it? I think it was one of his "inspired by" works, but still a work of genius.

Speaking of X68000 titles with great music, look up "Illumination Laser" (you might even find some evidence that I was there).

Calling From Heaven (Vampire Killer st6 BGM), Dracula Battle version. Keyboards and synth choir in this arrangement = orgasm. Love the palm-muted guitar in the enveloping second half.
