Robot games

Post by Obiwanshinobi »

Aren't robots severely underrepresented among playable characters? Not quite unlike dragons ("Dragon games" being another topic of note).
The robot games I can think of at the moment: Cave Story, Thexder, Atomic Robo-Kid, The Guardian Legend, Act-Fancer: Cybernetick Hyper Weapon, Rabio Lepus, Sonic Wings (series), Anachronox, Machinarium, MicroBot, RoboBlitz, Virtual-On (series), Scrapland, Star Wars: KotOR... That's about it. What else is there?
Mind you, the topic is dedicated neither to manned machines, nor to characters who used to be creatures of flesh and bone (Darth Vader, Robocop). Virtual-On is something of a borderliner (not sure about Rabio Lepus).

I also thought Virtual On's robots were remotely controlled by pilots?

To quote Wikipedia:
Virtual-On features mechs called Virtuaroids, or VRs, that are large robots the player controls in battles against enemy VRs, and its twin-stick control, in which two joysticks, complemented by an array of controls, are used by players. Additionally, in the plot of the first game, Cyber Troopers Virtual-On (Virtual-On: Operation Moongate), the Virtual-On's arcade machine is actually a remote operation device sent from the future in search of "Virtual-On Positive" (VO+) pilots.

Thexder is a mech. I, Robot is the big example I guess. In Saint Dragon you control a robot dragon, so there's a nice twofer. The Twin Bee ships are robots, right? In Gomola Speed you control a robot snake - I guess UPL had a thing for robots.

Twinbee's a really weird case, as the ships are sentient robots who also happen to have human pilots. Why do they even need pilots?

Black Hole Assault (jp. Heavy Nova): Hahah, funny American name. If it warn't a video game, you'd think it was a BangBros production. This one features a robot 8)

The Ninja Motherfucking Warriors Again (SFC). One of the most brutally satisfying robot games ever. Play as Ninja and get cracking skulls. Only slight downer is the green blood (thanks Mortal Kombat!), but it's hard to care much with the screen shaking every time the floor makes someone dead on impact. Even has a rather depressingly nihilistic ending that'll ram home the point you are (to paraphrase Jutah Fate) NOTHING MORE THAN A KILLING MACHINE. :o

Vectorman was a robot.

Scud the Disposable Assassin.

Kinda obscure here, but A.I.M and A.I.M 2 have you playing a hovertank robot Jesus.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

You got Act-Fancer but you missed Psycho-Nics Oscar. BIL has got Ninjas: Robots in Disguises covered.

Don't forget the Phantasy Star series, especially the maids in the Online games.

I don't believe that you can play as a robot in any Aero Fighters / Sonic Wings games. That's a cyborg, properly speaking.

I'll have to think of this a bit...I know there's plenty of robot heroes (heroines, too...) out there that I haven't thought of yet.

Been a while since I've seen that. Thanks! "Tiny Tank is my slave name." Yeah, he looks like he stings like a bee, because he isn't much bigger than one.

T.B. looks like Johnny Five, so maybe it looked like E.T. in its flesh and bone incarnation.

If Mega Man (and Astro Boy) games count, so do Panzer Bandit, Mischief Makers and Rakugaki Showtime (where Marina is playable too).

They lied, my copy of Probotector (on one of the Konami Collection cartridges) is just a renamed Contra. ;)

Guess the series counts though!

There's Browny from Hard Corps.

Honest John from Shippu Mahou Daisakusen / Kingdom Grandprix is a robot. Valnus from Gunbird and Valpiro from Gunbird 2, as well. The latter even has an ending where he wishes to become a Real Boy™ and is then promptly bro-raped by Aine.

Is Robo from Chrono Trigger a Real Robot™? Don't care to remember but his theme song was rad.

Yep, and his theme song also ripped off Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up

The first time I heard that song, I misheard the lyrics as "I'm gonna" and thought it was the greatest song ever created.

Gadget and Gadget Z of the Suikoden series. When there's more than 10 playable characters in a Japanese game, one of them is likely to be a robot.

Rom's an alien in a suit. The original Human Torch was one of the first comic book superheros, though, from back when Marvel was called Timely, and he's an android. The Vision is probably Marvel's most significant android hero, while DC had a robot superhero team for a while, the Metal Men.

Come to think of it, the earliest superpowered comic heroes weren't human, and the earlier human comic heroes weren't superpowered. The Phantom and Batman are just dudes in costumes.

There's the PSX import spanning a whopping four CDs by the title of 70s Robot Anime: Geppy X...plays out like a serialized 1970s anime shows spoofing a rag-tag team with vehicles that transform into bigger robot mecha. I was hoping that it'd be re-released as a single disc compliation but it never was.

Even in the classic 1986 arcade PCB release of Capcom's Hyper Dyne Sidearms featured two slick fightercraft capable of transforming into mecha suits and combining together to form two very different bigger armored mecha suits. Their human pilots, however, remain nameless to this day. It's quite easy to see some references to Gundam, Macross, and even a lone Nausicaä-themed sprite tribute throughout the game.

No, he looks like that bomb retrieval unit on that one episode of Psych. ;)

Are those JP only Wonder Project J games about robots that look like humans?

Probotector was mentioned, but there's also robots in a couple uncensored Contra games. Browny in Hard Corps and the female version with the same name in Contra Rebirth.

Is Mr. Heli a sentient helicopter? I think that counts

Along those lines, what about Opa-Opa?

BTW there's a playable robot guy in Alien Storm, and I think in Slave Zero you're a robot.

I thought of another game with a robot. B.O.B.

Edit: After looking at a video, I think he might be an alien in a suit. Doh!
