SS is weird scoring-wise... I got ~70M my first credit on stage 2, then 35M my second credit on stage 3, and on my third credit I just finished stage ONE with 72M.

lolwut

EDIT:

Ransom - 94,730,500 - 2-4 - JP - MAME

Again, lolwut

July: Amazing Great Gams Game Month

I'ma save everybody playing SS some trouble and link my highscore thread table.

Summary of the hints then:

First, the Asia version has much faster bullets, but for me currently my "kill screen" is almost in the same place for both games, in stage 2. So far, scoring opportunities until the stage 2 boss means that there isn't much going on even if you get to the boss, so I don't have much difference in score between both versions (despite getting farther in stage 2 in the Japan version).

Scoring is heavily influenced by dropping airborne enemies on things.

For all of us that have played (except maybe luy, but I'm not convinced in that score given his posting history), roughly half the score (and both extends) comes from the middle of the first stage.

Autofire note: In the arcade, one button press results in one shot, two quick taps sends out a burst, and taps prime the options to fire. Options will only fire when you release the fire button!

Fun fact: Custom CPUs on the Kaneko Super Nova System are marked Deneb, Vega, and Altair.

Haven't beaten my highscore, but here's a few minutes playing:

Sengeki Striker (Asia)

Ed Oscuro - 129,894,440 - Stage 2-3 - Asia - AF ON / 3

Wasn't paying attention to the options, d'oh.

That would be Tavia.

I don't think anyone has done character commentary on the GB2 cast. I'll step in, I guess, since character choice in this game is real damn important. If you have any revisions to suggest go ahead - these are just my opinions.

Alucard is pretty damn good. His charge shot is more effective than Tavia's, he moves quickly, and he has a wide shot. His close-range attack is mediocre but at deals more damage than Tavia. Too bad you can't move during his bomb and can't close in on bosses to deliver a point-blank strike.

Marion's homing is helpful (though later on many of the dangerous enemies aren't popcorns and this won't do much) but again she can't do great damage with charge or close-range, and her bomb sucks since you can't move at all. Not a bad choice though.

Tavia kicks ass as a survival character, since you can move freely during her bomb, and her melee attack deletes bullets - helpful in a pinch and makes the 1-6 boss much easier. Her charge isn't too shabby but she can't deal damage very quickly, and in this game that's a pretty big flaw.

Valpiro is horrifically slow but has several amazing advantages. His charge is helpful for gemhead collection and makes 1-5 much easier, his shot and subshots can tear down popcorns, and his bomb restricts movement but does great damage, but his fucking close-range attack, dear god that is amazing. By far the best in the game. If you can deal with his low speed he's very good.

Hei-Cob is... interesting. He's not terrible despite what my Dragon Blaze ST claims, but his movement speed and delayed-hit melee attack bite you in the ass quite a bit. His shot is godly, since the subshots are ~*piercing*~ and the area of cover is wide. His charge is reminiscent of the Hayate from S45II and has obvious uses. His bomb is a full-screen clear with no delay, and is probably the best in the whole game.

Aine moves damn fast and can deal huge damage with his double sword swipe, but he suffers from Quaid's problem of only being able to damage targets directly ahead of him. This bites you in the ass on 1-5 where there are huge quantities of turrets to deal with, and makes 1-7 even worse than usual. His charge attack is ~piercing~ and can come in handy during boss fights when you want to do damage but can't get in close. His bomb is very very homoerotic and you can't move during it (noticing a pattern?) so it's not of much use. Thankfully with Aine there is a very great 2-ALL video available so you can copy GODHAND's strats for great fun and profit.

Morrigan is the X-36 of Gunbird 2, boasting fast movement speed, a great melee attack, a homing shot, and a bomb that allows free movement. Too bad you need to use the Dreamcast to play as her.

Edit #2:

Ed Oscuro - 162,025,820 - Stage 2-4 - AS - AF ON / 3

Ran outta bombs right before I was able to drop a plane on the second boss. Didn't even get to reach it.

Also, I've now recorded two runs where I get a game over with two continues triggered

I just realized that the current Asia table highscore to beat is by a user (bkk) with an Aine bombing avatar

Previous was...
Ed Oscuro - 143,030,860 - Stage 2-1 - AS - AF ON / 3

I think everybody else in the thread was not really interested in playing the game XD

Should I add your score?

(Open question to everybody who enters scores for this game, actually!)

Sengeki Striker: DoubleThink - 127,414,850 - Stage 4-1 - Japan - MAME - AF ON / 3

I somehow beat stage 3 with no lives left first time. The controls feel like they were made for a different game >_> Letting the charge shot go off usually kills anything the planes could land on, but forgoing it loses what appears to be a x2 bonus for destroying large enemies (which in turn appears to carry over to whatever they land on), so outside of key places it might be better to just use it. The hitbox is equally strange, it feels like it's near the nose of the ship. Enjoying it nonetheless :)

Stage 6 Boss is so ridiculous, but everything else in this game seems manageable enough. It feels almost unreal that I can actually finally reach the extend!

Almost made it to stage 5, but that stage 4 boss man. I heretofore and thusly declare: Fuck.

I thought I'd dispose of the two frogs with a charged shot (Tavia's melee attack isn't very strong) but I released the button too early
