Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
Meta Fox a timeless classic! One of those games that isn't mentioned enough. Along with ZING ZING ZIP. (great game untill the last level where gets kinda crazy)
Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
I all these years I never managed to locate a game. The problem is that I do not remember not even the name of the game. He is very ancient, he could have been released from 1982 to 1986.
It is a shotem' up, identycal style to Dangar, Slap Fight and Xevious. You control a type of robot which part from above of the body remembers a half of circle, and only it has the legs in the half of bass. The first bunch of enemies are black slimes, seems with pollution creatures. Soon it comes fast bats shooting. An item in blue "P" square form give a blue force shield. Soon in the begining you need to cross a bridge. The robot (or something very near of one) was always walking in the vertical, from low to up. The black slimes were not shooting. It had a vibrant music. I played once, when i was child.
Please, help me to know the name of this game.
I did a image in paint, it can help.

Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
Should Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair be included here for its shooting sections? You've probably already considered it, i just wondered
Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
No, something like that won't be included. Not at the moment anyway. Thanks for your interest and question.

Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
Nice find, sven, thanks.
Researched a bit, it appears the release was in March '91, US only (?). Not sure if sold elsewhere.

Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
Some comments for 1984 games:
Was Metal Soldier Isaac ever released? As far as I know, it was a prototype
and Metal Soldier Isaac II was the first game in the series, in 1985.
Mega Zone is copyright 1983 and most sources have it that year. Is it really 1984?
Some other games you might consider shmups from 1984 (some are borderline...)
Acrobatic Dog Fight Technos
Astro Chase Exidy
D-Day Jaleco (weird and primitive, ship based)
Nova 2001 Universal
Progress Chuo Co. (Borderline, you play a tank)
Return of the Jedi Atari
Revenger '84 Magic Electronics
Sea Fighter Poseidon Taito
Sky Jaguar Konami
SWAT Bally Midway (weird, sort of shmup like and puzzle like)
Us vs. Them Mylstar (borderline, laserdisc backgrounds)
Zaviga Data East

There is no Metal Soldier Isaac series, just one game, at least as far as I know. The Eidolon wrote:Some comments for 1984 games:

Zaviga is definitely a shmup.
Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
yes, in Japan. The Eidolon wrote:Some comments for 1984 games:

yes, in Japan. (US was '83, november or december IIRC)Mega Zone is copyright 1983 and most sources have it that year. Is it really 1984?

Nova 2001 = 1983..not there yet.
Sky Jaguar I didn't see any evidence of sales.
The rest you mention there I considered borderliners or was unsure of.
Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
You may already know this but according to the instruction book for TwinBee Deluxe Pack the release dates for TwinBee, Detana!! TwinBee and TwinBee Yahho! are 5th March 1985, 20th February 1991 and 19th April 1995 respectively.
Also, are you going to include Fast Striker here, seeing as how it's coming out on MVS cart (and will apparently be sold through Japanese distributors)?

Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
@Mero - belated thanks for the konami info. added Fast Striker as well.
Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
If OutZone goes in the list now, surely Extermination (Taito 1987) qualifies as well! Another push scroller, but a forward-firing only one.
Jackal / Top Gunner is more shmup than Kiki Kaikai, at that.

Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
Are you interested in arcade games prior to 1984?
Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
Some MVS release dates:
ASO II: 25th March 1991
Last Resort: 23rd March 1992
Ninja Commando: 30th April 1992
Viewpoint: 20th November 1992
Sonic Wings 2: 18th July 1994
Pulstar: 28th August 1995
The information comes from an old issue of Neo Geo Freak.

Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
Thanks for the contribution, Mero.
Could you double-check that Viewpoint sale date, to make absolutely sure it says November, and not October?
That's the only discrepancy I have with your list there (multiple sources claimed October). The rest look a-ok.

Re: Chronology of Shooting [arcade only]
Yes it definitely says November. Here's the date as it is written: '92.11.20
If it contradicts multiple sources then it's probably a typing error or something.

It's listed among the Threads of Excellence, which was made to showcase all the great threads of the forum without filling up the thread listing with a dozen stickies.
