SPoNG is as reliable as the Magic Box or even worse.

That 1up article didn't confirm anything at all. Check the only mention of a 2D game by Treasure for the XB360 in the article.

"1UP: Looking towards the future, we know you like to make 2D games, but we know you're working on games for the Nintendo DS and the Xbox 360. Would you care to comment on these at all?

We're going to have a fighting game called Bleach for the DS, based on the manga. Completely 2D! [laughs]"

IGN: It's been announced that you're making Xbox 360 games, and we've heard some buzz that your first game for the platform will be 2D. Can you tell us what you can do with 2D games on a powerful system like Xbox 360?

Maegawa: Your information is incorrect.

IGN: Ahh... well, in general, if you were to make a 2D game on the Xbox 360, what could you possibly do with all that power?

Maegawa: For making a completely 2D game, the Game Boy Advance and DS are fine. For next generation systems, including Xbox 360 and others, we'd do 2D with polygons -- that is, the visuals are 3D, but the game play is 2D.

Just a guess but I don't think Treasure is interested in the 360 at all. It's too American and well they're just too Japanese.

They don't seem to mind us baka gaijins giving them our evil green american dollars so they can put bread on their tables.

They know they are appreciated here.

But yeah, I see what you're saying. Why bother with Winblows architecture when you got (OMFG, IT CAN ANSWER THE Ultimate question to life! R0xorz!) the PS3 or Revolution?

I'm no Treasure fanboy, but it's unfortunate that no one will step up and try to make an amazing 2D game with todays technology. Sure DS is fine, but who wants just fine?

In the EDGE interview Maegawa talks about that and says a 2D game on PS2 would have to be very high quality, and would cost more/take more time than a 3D one. Which is why they would make a 2D game with polygons.

I'd rather see more cell-shaded as well. I've always liked "illustrator" style graphics.

EDIT: I didn't like Astroboy -- am I the only one?

I get the reasoning, but it's still a shame.

Gross. You'll love the X's when it hits Nickelodeon.

Couldn't agree more. Imagine a highres 2d game with more animation than 3rd strike and a good artstyle...

So, basically like Ikaruga. I think some people term this "2.5D".
That's fine with me, as long as it's still "2D gameplay". :D

I've got no problem with a next-gen Treasure game with 2D gameplay and 3D graphics. Now that I think about it, I think the art direction in their polygonal games I generally prefer over their sprite-based games.

I mean, stuff like Astro Boy and Mischief Makers looks fine, but feels a little rough around the edges- there's some inconsistency here and there, etc. Then again, I really like what they did with 2D visuals for Dynamite Headdy.

The bottom of this japanese TGS news page says according to Babelfish...
Xbox 360 entry publisher: Treasure
Xbox 360 development title: Original shooting game (tentative name)

Hmm...well, if the "original" translation is accurate, then I guess we can probably rule out "Project RSG3" or whatever other sequels were being speculated on...but I guess we'll just hafta wait and see for sure.
