RQ: Scoring tricks in Slap Fight/Alcon or Slap Fight MD

Post by lgb »

I heard something about using different weapons to expose certain flowers for points. When/where and how would I go about this? Is there anything else I'm missing? The difference between scores in the score thread is leaving me confused to a fault.

Any version will do, but info would be preferably for the arcade version or Megadrive port (and Slap Fight MD, if there's any tricks in that).

The higher weapons each trigger a specific type of bonus.

Bomb: At certain parts of the game, dropping a bomb will cause a plant to appear (example: area 7, the grass inside the loop of road). Additionally, some parts of the terrain can be destroyed, like the roofs in area 12.

Laser: When shooting one of the (3?) saplings in the game with the laser, the plant will grow and points will be added to your score while the plant is being shot (example: the end of area 27). I never tried bombing to create a plant and then hitting it with the laser.

Homing Missile: The only weapon which will reveal hidden caches. There are absolutely tons of hidden caches in the game (example: area 9).

My recollection is using Homing Missile+Side exclusively while playing, possibly changing to Shot with autofire for one of the bosses. Probably I could have increased my point gain per loop by, for example, staying on homing missile until ~area 27, then switching to laser for the sapling, and then switching back to homing missile again. The game loops infinitely, however, so I was happy enough with my score per loop.

Uncertain bonus or superstition: I never was able to predict precisely how many points I would get from the final boss. I wasn't sure if there was an invisible timer or I wasn't hitting all of the turrets. I noticed getting a lower total one time when I didn't loop through all of the items (that is, bypassing shield without activating it). I am not sure if there is a bonus there or not, but I always made a point to cycle the items at least once from that point on.

Saw one of the flowers today (I think it was parsec 27), but didn't bother to expose it. I'm probably going to check out those caches for my point fix, or just keep on shooting things.

Ah, I forgot about the little Space Invaders alien in Slap Fight MD, somewhere near the end of the game. You get quite a few 10Ks through him by just focusing Shots on him. I reckon Shot is what you need here.

lfb> the little space invaders guy is in the arcade version of ALcon as well(in the bnlue "techy" area..(at about 200,000 points or so...(if you mostly use missles.)..not sure what he is worth and I don't think that you can kill him. you all know about the begginning trick right?..just don't shoot anything..with your first ship..and how long you last makes a difference in where the game starts you..(and how many bonus points you get before your second ship starts. as well as your ship is powered up) What is the max bonus points,(I've seen the second ship start with 210,000 points...(I got past the first water/pool area..but I'm not sure how far...I've seen no shooting bonus of 1,000 -150,000 - 180,000- 210,000 are there any more..(I just got the arcade board yesterday..and on a good game I'm getting 300,000+....gotta work on it. I need someone else here to get or like the game regulus(cause I need some strategy help on that one. It was a 1983 sega system 8 game...kinda like vulgus/strategy x all mushed together..with some xevious thrown in for good measure.)

I got 6 twin galaxies world records last weekend while in Seattle.

mr. driller 500m mode 360,000+
1000 m mode 825,000+
pang3 1 player panic 400,000 (or so)
sidseattle and brad 2 player panic not sure
Daioh 1 player score 400,000+
sid seattle and brad 2 player score 600,000+
(daioh was played on a horizontal moniter with a 45 degree left turn on the joystick and only two buttons..(instead of the normal 6- so no bombs used)....

I also got 2nd best in the world on life force 605,000 (high score is 637,000)(that record has stood the test of time since 1987)

more world records soon..I am currently working on:
aero fighters/sonic wings(207,000 isn't hard..I just need to record a good run)
mx5000/flak attack no world record yet
Regulus no world record yet
brix/zyzzyx(waiting for correct board, might play jack the giant killer instead)1,051,000
blazeon(no wr score yet) don't quite understand how possesing other ships works yet..(any ideas?)
road fighters(actually plays like a shmup)1,500,000
Alcon/slap fight 1,056,000
raiden II 207,000 (tough to get a good run recorded)
Looking for a nemesis pcb if anyone has one to sell.

Good work on those scores. But remember that Twin Galaxies 'world records' are often a lot lower than the real world records.

Slap Fight, for example, is a remarkable 9,999,990+a (21 loops) by STAC-AAY.

For reliable world records, this thread's good for it.

EDIT: Daioh is staggeringly over 20 million!

Anyway - this is going off topic, and I'm not helping!
