When you start working through the list, try to save Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop (including the film), and all the Ghost In The Shell stuff until last.

Once you've watched them nearly everything else will seem so poor in comparison. The original GITS film especially will ruin nearly everything for you, but both Stand Alone Complex series are fantastic on their own. As a bonus, the dubs for these are all absolutely top rate jobs. I prefer a really good dub to subs, but a sub is always better than a mediocre dub.

Oh - add Jin-Roh and Freedom to your list.

I've actually already watched most of GITS.

First movie: Good
Second: Very bad
Series: Good until the Tachikomas get taken away

I was definately planning on saving Samurai Champloo.

Although the second movie had tons of CG, its excessive use wasn't that bad. Compared to the first, it wasn't as good 8)

I thought the opening theme song would make it obvious what kind of show it is. :P

What's really funny is comparing the character designs from season 1 to season 2. For some reason the characters all get younger as time goes on, or something.

Yeah, it's an unfunny, unentertaining piece of s*** with crappy chara designs, CG, and filler music. The animation quality is smooth, so it's got that going for it. If you're looking to watch something with the name "Takahashi" on it, then start with Takahashi Rumiko - pretty much any anime series based on her manga 8)

I know this artist, his studio is right down the street from me. Big R-type and Blazing Star fan actually!

You might want to check out FLAG, I haven seen it yet, but it is supposed I be very good.

I picked up Outlaw Star, hadn't seen this in yeeeaars... Never heard the Japanese voices, just the crappy dub that aired on TV way back. Loving it so far :)

She's the Stan Lee and possibly Jack Kirby equivalent when it comes to manga (I guess Tezuka Osamu would be more like Kirby), except her stories are about slice-o'-life with some surreal and exaggerated comedy inserted into it.

Whenever I recommend Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2 to people, I usually try to compare it to The Simpsons and Futurama since there are some equivalent aspects: long-running series with almost stand-alone episodes, story arcs within the entire series, Tomobiki and Furinkan = Springfield and NYC 2999, a wide range of characters (the main ones having a lot of personal development over the entire series), a distinct design style, smart writing and in-jokes (either as self-reference or from Pop culture). I mean, these go a little above and beyond "cartoons for kids." They stand as bona fide television sitcoms. So, whatever sitcom you have enjoyed watching, then there is an anime equivalent for that (usually from the late 70s to the mid-90s).

With that said, the last great television series was either "Irresponsible Captain Tylor" or Marmalade Boy. Since members in this thred are looking for Sci-Fi (and not so much of the shoujo), then they should make some time to give "Tylor" a chance 8)

Is it really necessary to turn any anime thread into a rant on how about new anime suck, people?

I really can't think of a more overrated series than Patlabor.. Love the mechanical design, the setting was great, the characters could have been good, and the awesome mech-on-mech combat potential was there. The best part of the franchise was whe...zzzzzzzzz...

Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2 were some of the first series' I ever watched back when it was nearly impossible to get fansubs, thank god for an older brother who was crazy enough to import laserdiscs and read downloaded scripts to me. One day he came back from the comic store with a huge box of VHS tapes, tons of bootleg classics, Bubblegum Crissis, Vampire Hunter D, Devil Hunter Yoko... you name it. Before this, the only anime I was exposed to was when my awesome babysitter would have us watch Robotech, I must have been around 5-6 years old.

That said, while I still appreciate the old stuff, little compares to the finer works from IG, Madhouse, and Gonzo, and other studios from around the turn of the millennia.

I was tempted to pick up the complete 1st season of Code Gease now that a budget release is out... I restrained. What do you guys think about that series, I know it has a following but is also hated by alot of people too.

I didn't like the designs for Code Geass, so I lost interest in watching it. Also, if I see a lot of excessive use of CG (which is, like, all of animu now), I tune out and go back to the old, hand-drawn stuff. Of course, I'll watch some odds and ends made from 1995 on up, and I may buy it if the set is cheap enough. It doesn't detract me from seeing these series as low quality junk 8)

Captain Tylor is hilarious, from what I've seen of it.

I'm not a big fan of Rumiko Takahashi. Let me preface this by saying that my primary experience with her writing was with Inuyasha. Inuyasha really suffers from what I'll call "syndicated comics syndrome". That is, the desire to keep the series running for as long as possible. Nothing of consequence ever happens in the story. Yes, things "happen", but it never meaningfully alters the course of the plot. The consequences of a plot point rarely matter, because at the end of each arc, something always happens to reset the story back to the status quo. The story seemed to stretch on forever without point. Maybe her other series are better in this regard, but Inuyasha really bored me for this reason.

I was a big fan of Ranma ½ way back when they were publishing the manga locally...then, the last book arrived, and after nearly 40 books the end result is that pretty much everything is exactly the way it was in book 1. I was really disappointed, it was like there wasn't any point to reading any of it.

Which is why I compare it to American cartoons: some of it are stand-alone episodes and others have story arcs within the series. As was stated, the story resets back. If story progression is what's important, then Maison Ikkoku and maybe the Mermaid saga, as well as her short stories, are more apt for this (Rumic World and Rumiko Takahashi Presents) 8)

I've said it before: Ranma, Urusei Yatsura, and Inuyasha go on and on... and return again in OAV and teevee special form every so often 8)

Be sure to check out Freedom in it's Blu-Ray incarnation...you'll be blown away. Such a stunning overall presentation in 1080p format indeed. Even the cool BR variant Freedom boxed set that was released in the USA sports some cool artwork from Katsuhrio Otomo of Akira fame. I saw it one day in the BR sales aisle at my local Best Buy priced at $99.99 USD and bought it blindly not knowing what it was about beforehand. Chalk it up to another cool OVA anime series find/discovery. If you have a sharp eye, try to spot the lone candy cab amongst the ruins during the opening credit scene. It's a given.
