Organic shmups(or partially)
Does anyone know some good shmups that have a good set of organic stages? Side scrolling or top down. Im familiar with Gradius and R-type, wondering if anyone has any in mind that I would be missing. Don't ask.. I just like shmup with organic/cybernetic feel to it, I know its weird

Re: Organic shmups(or partially)
I'm guessing you already know of X-Multiply, then? It's pretty much all organic stages.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Salamander 1 and 2
Cyber Core - PC-Engine
Crying / Biohazard Battle - Mega Drive / Genesis
( the last two might be less organic, more about insects, but maybe you like them )
Pulstar
Last Resort ( enemy-design )
Gynoug / Wings of War ( level 5 )

Can't go wrong with flying brains! Gotta love Gunhed/Blazing Lazers.
Also I found the organic levels in XOP games appealing, due to all the organic "shrapnel" that spews forth when you shoot them.

Andro Dunos has an organic level too.

Thunder Force III and IV have a decent amount of organic levels. As does Deathsmiles.

I am sad to report there are no organic levels in Major Stryker.
There appears to be some organic goings-on in Heavy Unit, though not enough to rise to the level of "organic level," I don't think.

Re: Organic shmups(or partially)
These aren't quite as ideal as X-Multiply's "Luciferous body horror all day everyday" (nothing is, really), but they might still interest you:
Metal Black (AC) - like its better-known stablemate Darius, Metal Black's atmosphere has a certain organic, ecological sense to it, with lots of biomechanical marine life as opposition. Difference is Darius tends to be vibrant and colourful, where MB is deliberately a very burnt-out, post-extinction event kind of deal. If you like ironshore like I do you may dig this!
Gynoug / Wings of Wor (MD, already mentioned) - occult-themed shooter whose levels and enemies are pretty blah overall, but whose bosses are nearly all abominations like a biomechanical fusion of man and steam engine, a fossilised fetus, a being undergoing some kind of hellish intestinal-ripping torture and a blood-weeping giant gritting his teeth in agony at his painfully tumescent, obscenely massive cock. Just YT the bosses if you can't be arsed with the game (I sure can't be!).
R-Type Delta - the entire series has overtones of unhallowed cybernation and gruesome viscera; on the off chance you're not familiar with Delta, special mention here goes to the nightmarish womb of Fifth Contact / Evil and the almost palpably stinking, Bydo-overrun human base of Sixth Contact / Awakening, featuring a midboss affectionately known as "the meat blimp" or "the sausage of doom;" whatever you call it, it's a massive, armored flying phallus discharging yellow nastiness everywhere. I think this might actually be the only flying dick enemy in the genre?
edit: Unless we go into the doujin/indie realm which contains the unnerving quasi-hentai Galshell games, the overwhelmingly bloody Psyche Metal: The Bleeding and (drum roll):
Space Phallus - how in God's name has this not been mentioned yet?

Rayxanber III is kind of biomechanical:

Chimera Beast (was never released, but I like it a bunch):

Dragon Breed qualifies, but that is fairly well-known:

Abadox:

More of a platform/shooter but Act-Fancer:

edit : aaa ... i think i understand now what you meant... organs levels, sorry,
then... Microcosm xD though it is neither a side scroller nor a top down ahaha it s a perspective shmup... and it does not really qualify as good shmuppery.

Has anyone mentioned Dragon Blaze?

Re: Organic shmups(or partially)
Another recommendation for Abadox.
Watching that vid brings back soooo many childhood memories. That game totally kicks ass, aside from the joke-easy bosses.

Re: Organic shmups(or partially)
A bit OOT but there's a quite old, Rayxanber-styled shmup in PC (Xadlax Plus or whatever it is, can't remember). I remember played it once, but deleted it forever because it crashes a lot (at least, IIRC it was one of my very first download from Shoot the Core).

Oho, isn't there a bio-level in EDF: Earth Defense Force?
For that matter, isn't there something in BIO METAL?

Aleste/Power Strike has a fair amount of plant tentacles from the halfway point in the game.

Re: Organic shmups(or partially)
Not quite a shmup, but a horizontal autoscroller - Balloon Kid (GB). One stage is within a whale.
GunHed/Blazing Lazers is better on the high difficulty (takes entering a code). The organic stage is memorable indeed.

As stated already, X-Multiply gets a vote from me.
Amazing backgrounds but the game itself if my favorite offering from IREM.

I haven't played all the way through, but the only bio-themed levels I saw were the sidescroller jumpin' segments.soupbones wrote:Legendary Wings comes to mnd.
LW and Phelios will definitely satisfy your rocks-and-statuary cravings though. Throw in Youjyuden and Extermination for good measure if they don't (not traditional "shmups" according to the myopic Mr. Turrican view, though).

Re: Organic shmups(or partially)
Thanks for the replies everyone, really. Ive checked through every game you mentioned. Right on the spot, I definately like how X-Multiply is looking and Gynoug is damn horrifying. I played Delta a long time ago but didn't give it much time.. I should change that. I picked up Pulstar as well because it's so similar to R-type and it's a neo-geo game but that's obvious because the creator worked for neo-geo at the time? So ill be getting last resort as well. I love anything neo-geo related including the fighting games. Just curious a little off topic but what do you guys think of "In The Hunt" ?
