STG of the Month (May/June 2012) - DonPachi!

Post by CptRansom »

This month's game is DonPachi! Please use the Japanese version of the game (or the Hong Kong version if you're a masochist; please indicate in your entry if you're using the HK version). :D Please, NO old scores!

Image

Please submit scores in the following format:

Name - Score - Stage - Max HIT - Ship Type

Scores will be only be accepted until midnight EST on June 30th. Please take all strategy discussion to the relevant thread I've set up in the Strategy subforum. Good luck, try hard, and have fun!

A huge thank you to trap15 for putting together this high score table at http://dodonpachi.daifukkat.su/stgotm/!

Here. Have my first run of the game in months.

Code: Select all

Giest118 - 4671290 - 4 - 44 - Type C
Hmm I think I might need moar practice.

EDIT:
Just did this right after:

Code: Select all

Giest118 - 5499730 - 5 - 33 - Type A
Are you going to have a different score table for the different types, or will you keep them all together?

You would not believe how the fuck this run ended. It was a suicide bullet. Off of a fucking bee. The ONLY suicide bullet to spawn off of that bee, about a second after I actually lasered it.

QUITE A WAY TO END MY BEST RUN OF THIS GAME SO FAR

My last run and scoreboard update for tonight. I seriously have NO CLUE how I got through stage 4. I bombspammed the shit out of the boss and felt no shame, but getting through the actual stage was pure luck after the first part. >.> WHATEVER I'LL TAKE IT.

Image

Ransom - 8,038,770 - 5 - 72 - Type C

At least I finally got a NM run through stage 3 so I have a good save state to start practicing stage 4 instead of flailing through it like a madman.

Ok this will be my baseline. I've never really played it seriously so I definitely need to learn some scoring strategy.

Wrote up a quick webapp to keep track of the STG of the month scores (I'll give CptRansom the ability to modify the scores as soon as he responds on IRC)

Excuse the complete lack of styling, but here it is: http://dodonpachi.daifukkat.su/stgotm/

I'm at work until 3, and then I have plans for tonight, so I won't be on IRC until probably around 9-ish (EST). It looks awesome as hell though!

Stage 4 is such a brutal jump in difficulty. I find it easy to no-miss up to there and then suddenly the popcorn all over the place swarm me. Last death was pretty pathetic though, I forgot about the 'trap' at the end of the level where the bomb item carrier is followed by a huge wave of popcorn that ram you if you're greedy about rushing to grab the bomb.

Did pretty well and got a lot of clutchy saves. Somehow the 1up in stage 4 didnt drop.. the turret needs to shoot projectiles before killing it? Stage 5 is pretty damn long, better be ready for it next time :p

Need to learn to nmnb the area 3 boss, with high rank it's pretty hard.

.inp isn't really worth watching unless you want to see bad play but might as well get used to uploading them already.

I stop caring about NB starting at the stage 3 boss. The nonstop tracking pattern always screws me over, so I just laser-bomb it like a bitch. =/

Great progress, Zaarock! I think we can all agree that stage 4 is an asshole?

My best from the first few credits:

Gonna hit this game hard. Got body slammed by the ships coming from the bottom of the screen on stage 5.

My best first three stages so far, 4 went ok for my standards and almost managed to kill 1-5 boss with a single life I think.. fell into the trap of shooting the mines that shoot diagonally while moving. Tried too many risky things on 5, I'm sure I'll get into the loop quite soon. Your turn ransom :p

1st credit after grinding away at HK version for about 6 hours of gametime. Not a good run at all, plus one of my buttons gave out in stage 4 so I had to change the button layout for awkward times. Pretty much just a placeholder score since I plan on improving it enough to get a 1-ALL and never play this again.

i see you got to stage 5 already but i remember few things about this game:
I dont think rank increase before stage 5 and only if you no miss and no bomb or bomb twice maybe (someone confirm this? )
stage 3 boss is really easy actually:
shoot the big row of missile at the bottom of the screen so they spawn no bullets.
to dodge the homing wave just stay bottom center get the focus from the wave and dodge it at last sec slowly then wait other wave and dodge it last sec slowly in a left and right kinda dance.

The constant wave (where it shoots a new homing bullet wave several times per second) makes that not an option, and you end up just having to nudge your way from one end of the screen to the next. It's basically guaranteed death if you run out of room.

Had a good run just now that ended too early for a new high score entry because I played stage 5 like a retard.

I'll jump into this. Should be fun.

Zengeku - 4,839,230 - 1-5 - 43 - Type A

First time ever playing this and shmupmame won't let me put up states to practice it so I'll have to track down some replays to find ideal ways to handle the stages. I think I died twice to enemies coming up from the bottom edge of the screen. And once by trying to dodge around a bullet but moving into the right edge of the screen. Which was pretty fail.

I'll try playing some more hopefully (exams coming up though).

I've also been looking for a version of MAME that I could use save states with but had no luck. Moreover, slowpoke MAME doesn't even recognise the game exists despite all the files being there.
