Otogi Matsuri

For those that don't know, this is a manga written/drawn by Junya Inoue (Progear, ESPRade, Guwange, etc. character designer). I don't really read manga anymore, but decided to pick this up and give it a look. To be honest, I found a #4 signed by Inoue-san, so figured I should pick up the others and read it. Pretty good stuff. Very Guwnage-ish. Glad I got it, and not too rough to read.

Great little book. I blew through the first volume pretty quickly.

Just found this site. Apparently the city Inoue used as the basis of the town in the manga. And it is located in (surprise) Kouchi, where he grew up.

Hmm, I'd seen some of those b+w drawings before, so this is where they're from...does anyone know whether that giant spider with the cat head is some kind of "actual" Japanese legendary creature/demon/thingy, or is it just some critter that Jun made up and used for both Guwange and this? Some of the things in there are really creepy-looking...especially that thing with the long neck. Yeesh...oh, and do I see a character or two from ESP Ra.de making an appearance, or is it just my imagination?

I think it's your imagination. Two of the main characters (Yousuke and Moyogi) look very much like Yuusuke and Irori (respectively). I'm not sure about the cat-monster thing. They make mention at the first of the book of many mythical stories... including a kappa and something else I can't remember. They also use a lot of proper nouns that google might shed some light on.

I do enjoy the book though... haven't read a manga in ages.

I enjoyed this manga as well. I haven't been able to finish it though since Kinokuniya hasn't picked up the rest of the volumes
