Maybe I'm failing to see the logic, maybe its a cultural thing, but saying that 90% of all of Japan's population are faggots like a homophobic and then talking squeaky-clean about racism sounds like hypocrisy to me as they're both *equally* just as bad as eachother.

I see it as like slander: if it's stated for the sake of being offensive and making people look bad then by all means the speaker should be ripped to pieces, but otherwise it all should be kept public for all to see if proven fact. Doesn't matter what kind of slander it is or who you're insulting, the rule applies regardless. No double standards.

Sure it might make aboriginals look bad if a scientific paper came out with statistical information suggesting violent behaviour as a result of them drinking grog, but that's not racist: that's scientific fact. Similarly, if a survey result found that 90% of people in Japan were homosexuals then I'd be calling it statistical fact too. Going in front of a microphone and saying "homos suck" or "abos stink because I said so" however is plain discrimination and should result in said person having removal of his/her teeth via the fist.

That bold bit is pretty much what I was getting at. Didn't mean to kick the hornets' nest rancor, you do seem like a fine chap even if we do have some disagreements occasionally - I could've sworn seeing something along those lines on the 'Japan has no interest in sex' or some similar thread but clearly I misconstrued, and for that I apologise. The main thing I was getting at is that there's double standards in what's classed as 'discrimination that deserves action' and it annoys the living hell out of me.

One can make homophobic comments in jest and people take it for what it is (humour, hell I have such a comment as my signature) but if I said something based on actual personal observations about racial differences/male sexual differences or even made a similar jest comment it gets people's necks up without even trying. I mean, people here seriously gave mjclark shit for having some stupid doll for a display picture because apparently it's 'racist'. Pathetic. I'd like to see them spend 6 months up here living with me in Darwin and try to stay believing that there is no justification in discriminate attitudes ever - the place has a nasty knack for doing it.

The point is fine BPze, but not particularly well thought out. When someone uses the word 'gay', they're not actually "taking the mickey out of gays", the word is just being used as a humorous alternate.

Homosexual slurs, unfortunately, exist as a mainstream facet of humour. Before you jump on that, I'm not defending the word 'gay' being used so lightly, but you do need to recognise that the intentions behind its use and of its user are different to a racial slur. Not my rules, but that's why there's a disparity with the moderation of the two.

I've used 'gay' in a South Park sense many times on this forum, despite being aware of Homosexual members here (Bareknuckleroo, iirc, one of the best new posters we've had here in years). If he posts here to say those uses, which are not actually directed at homosexuals, are offensive to him, I'll refrain from ever using them again.

Call me an idiot but I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying. Homophobic comments (insulting gays) are not parallel to racist comments (insulting race x)? Maybe I'm lacking in the sleep department or something but one being given the lesser treatment because it's has multiple use doesn't sound like a valid excuse to me. They're both insults - if one's gonna be censored so should the other. Clearly I'm not seeing things the way you are.

No words should be censored. Censorship is a fascist action 99% of the time and is akin to denial at it's best. Peeps need to just toughen up and learn to differentiate between words with multiple uses. Gay can mean homosexual, happy, lame, or be used as a name. That covers a neutral, positive, negative, and functional use respectfully. If we strike one use out we may as well strike all of them out. I wouldn't censor a gay man from using the word 'straight' and I fully expect the same treatment in return.

I could describe badly designed furniture as gay and it wouldn't mean I thought some art deco was about to sprout dicks and start jizzing all over my living room. He could tell me something was straight bullshit and I wouldn't associate my sexuality with it at all.

Words are just words. Sticks and stones. The world is full of people who will say mean things to you. What's important is intent. Ill intent is caused by ignorance. You can't wipe out a word anyway, but you can help to change people's intent when they use it through good will and education.
