Zanac Neo (Zanac X Zanac) the best PSX vert SHMUP?

I wonder why it is mostly unknown. Besides being Compile's final game which makes it pretty much a must-have, is it the best Playstation exclusive vertical shooter?

Seriously, the game is very well known and highly regarded here. But if you ask why it's not that popular, well, it didn't get a western release, it is not a famous brand like R-Type or Gradius, and on top of that, the japanese version quickly became quite pricey so even import-willing shmuppers couldn't afford it.

Zanac Neo best vertical on Psx? Hmm, probably. No doubt best vertical BORN on psx. And overall on the very top along with Xevious, DDP and Raiden DX, I'd say.

Yeah, I would agree with the OP the only other title that comes to mind is Strikers 1945 Part 2. That is, of course excluding all the games that are ported to other consoles.

I'm with Shatterhand: best game on PSX. At the same time I would agree with Ceph that Zanac Neo is relatively unknown. I mean, think about how much more hype surrounds Radiant Silvergun. I'm not sure why RSG gets so much more attention, but there's no denying it does.

As much as Zanac X Zanac is a great game, the best has to be Gradius Gaiden. Easily.

Any game that calls me a loser gets highest ranking automatically!

There is that, and the levels are too long, sometimes with boring stretches. But for pure fun on the PSOne only Harmful Park comes close.

It is absolutely the best, IMO. I've yet to play ANY import or domestic PS1 or PS2 shmup that compares with this game in terms of sheer addictiveness. The graphics and sound are great too. WELL worth your money.

I sold my ZanacXZanac within a month of buying it. It is better-than- average but not great; Gradius Gaiden is a way better and cheaper game.

Well, there's Stahlfeder and Airgrave by Santos, neither of which are spectacular in any way.

i didn't like it. i have been much more satisfied with Strikers 2, the Caves, etc.

the game just didn't scream fun at me. don't like the weapons system, or the actual play mechanics. i suspect i'll be getting shot in the head with a bullet that has "compile" scratched into the side... shatterhand.
